Dothan Alabama The Basics

Doctor Larry R. Kirkland, Jr. is the founder of the Southeast Intervention Group, Inc.—a state-funded umbrella company that operates Step By Step Recovery for men and The Herring Houses—a long-term sober living program for women in Dothan, Alabama.

While living at the residences, clients adhere to the 12 steps focusing on the spiritually-enriching aspects of the program. The Herring House community provides clients with structure while encouraging autonomy and leaving room for freedom and fun in recovery. In addition, director Larry Kirkland extends sober living accommodations to formerly-incarcerated persons from Houston, Coffee and Dale counties.

Accommodations and Amenities

Prior to admittance to, women must have completed primary treatment. The Herring House is a two-story home in a suburban neighborhood. The house is a stately colonial two-story house with a white exterior and black shutters. Herring House accommodates 14 women in eight rooms, with most women sleeping in double-occupancy quarters—singles are occasionally available. Residents share two and a half bathrooms. The home has an extension built to include a community room and a small balcony.
Clients are responsible for providing their own food and staff transport clients to and from the grocery store each week. Herring Houses provide fully-equipped kitchens with all cooking supplies, bed linens, cleaning supplies and on-site laundry. Rent includes electric, water and garbage pickup services. Basic cable and land-line phone services are also included and clients are permitted to make free long distance phone calls at the main office. WiFi access is also available at the main office where clients can search the Alabama Job Link of the Career Center/Alabama Employment service to apply for jobs online. Clients also frequently visit the nearby Houston-Love Memorial Library at downtown Dothan for additional resources. Residents typically stay between 90 days and 18 months.
Staff keep up an “escrow” account for each client’s personal finances. Family are allowed to send money to the account, but staff recommend clients keep no more than $10 to $20 cash on their persons.

Rules and Regulations

Prior to admission, clients must undergo a psychological assessment overseen by the Clinical Director. Women are then added to a two- to three-week wait list choosing a preferred date to begin their stay Herring House. Potential clients must keep in contact with the facility throughout the wait list time period in order to demonstrate their willingness to commit to the program and to confirm a spot will be ready for them when the time comes. The agency recommends clients check in once a week to keep up to date with the status of their residency.

Herring House require a minimum of 72 hours of “clean time” before clients are admitted and women must arrive from detox, residential or an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) with a minimum length of treatment of two to three weeks. Once admitted, a non-refundable deposit of $380 is due which includes the intake fee as well as the cost of the first two weeks of rent. After week three, residents begin paying $150 per week. Clients must obtain employment while staying at Herring House.

Clients must get a sponsor in the first two weeks of their stay and are encouraged to meet with their sponsors on Saturday afternoons. Residents are required to complete a 90-meetings-in-90-days regimen. Until a client is employed, she is required to attend two 12-step meetings each day with several off-site options available in the nearby vicinity, including The Wiregrass Club and downtown Dothan. Clients have three Sunday 12-step meeting options, a mandatory house meeting at The Wiregrass Club and the optional New Life Group at the Ashford Alabama American Legion Hall with Dr. Kirkland. At the house meetings, clients must check in and submit to drug tests, if requested.

Weekdays begin with wake-up followed by breakfast, meditation, a mandatory clean-up with assigned chores (subject to inspection), a 12-step meeting, education groups (including relapse prevention and recovery education), mandatory evening check-in, meal time and a 12-step/The Spiritual Journey/Bible Study group every evening. Curfew is at 10:30 pm every night. In addition to the group meetings, individual counseling is available to clients as-needed.

Cell phones, TVs, DVD players, game consoles, laptops, iPod Touches, iPads and obscene clothing are not allowed. Herring Houses does not tolerate ripped or torn clothing, tank tops, sleeveless shirts, drug or alcohol-themed clothing or sagging pants. There is a zero-tolerance policy for alcohol, drugs and weapons of any kind.

Herring Houses staff include a clinical director, a house manager (who lives on-site), a primary therapist, a staff nurse, Master’s-level counselors and a spirituality group counselor.

In Summary

Southeast Intervention Group Inc. offers a blend of residential treatment programming and sober living lifestyle. Though clients are required to complete substance abuse treatment prior to admission, staff refer clients to off-site groups, individual therapy, medication management and neuro-psychiatric evaluations at nearby treatment facilities in the area. While the Herring House and the men’s Step By Step home at Dothan are considered sober living residences, the availability and structure of the program offer many of the benefits of residential rehab treatment.
