Forest Lake Minnesota,The Basics

Located in the Minneapolis suburb of Forest Lake, Minnesota, South Shore Serenity provides sober living for an intimate number of women. Their mission is to provide a serene atmosphere so that women can connect with a Higher Power, while they work on a 12-step program and rebuild their lives.

Accommodations and Amenities

South Shore Serenity is a spacious white-shingled, country-style house situated on a lush lawn replete with trees. The white house, which is over 100 years old, has green trim and a screened porch. The house includes a fully equipped kitchen, a dining room with large windows framed by dark blue panels, a large country style table, matching chairs and an antique hutch with colorful pottery. South Shore Serenity accommodates six women. There are two double-occupancy rooms and two single rooms. A typical single includes a twin bed topped with a turquoise blue comforter, an armoire, a rocking chair, desk and windows framed with dark brown panels.

The women are responsible for their own groceries, and meal preparation. Often residents dine family style during the evenings. Amenities include cable TV, linens, a house computer with Internet and laundry room. A house manager lives on the premises, and oversees operations.

Rules and Regulations

Potential clients must have been clean and sober for a 30-day minimum. Their sobriety must be verified. Preferably, they have completed primary care at a residential treatment facility in the area. South Shore Serenity asks for a three-month minimum length of stay. Residents must follow aftercare protocols, and attend Intensive Outpatient (IOP) or outpatient programs, if applicable. Requirements include attending three weekly 12-step meetings, performing household chores and being at the house meetings.

Many residents attend AA/NA meetings, which are held daily at the near by Alano House in Forest Lake. A women’s meeting is held at the Alano House at 6 pm Monday evenings. Other rules include obtaining employment, attending school or participating in community service. Random drug and alcohol screenings are conducted. Residents who relapse must leave the premises to ensure the safety of the entire household.

South Shore Serenity is a member of the Minnesota Association of Sober Housing (MASH) which demands high standards from its affiliates.
