South Pacific Private Outpatient

The Basics

The Sydney, Australia based South Pacific Private offers inpatient and outpatient care for adults with addiction concerns, behavioral health issues and co-occurring disorders. The outpatient treatment tracks are a step-down program to residential and are comprised of a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and outgoing aftercare support. Programming consists of daily group therapy along with regular individual counseling, 12-step support, CBT and relapse prevention focus. Treatment is abstinence based and helps clients regain lost confidence and repair self esteem along with learning how to maintain their sobriety.

Treatment and Staff

The day treatment programs usually run from seven to 12 weeks in length and are all tailored to suit each individual client’s specific needs. The day program focuses on helping clients transition back into their communities smoothly along with addressing common concerns and issues that come up once they leave the structure of an inpatient treatment. There are also specialty recovery focuses, like identifying triggers and cravings, and being aware of high risk situations.

In general clients attend all day treatment sessions that are comprised of group therapy, lectures and writing work. Typically these sessions address one particular issue per day, like PTSD, trauma, and life skills for instance. Depending on the treatment track clients explore unresolved issues that may have contributed to the existing addiction, examine grief and coping mechanisms, learn how to set healthy boundaries and learn mindfulness.

The Life Skills 2 Program is a typical step-down curriculum for those who have exited the residential program through the same facility. This programs emphasizes clients looking at the habits and behaviors they have within any relationships and offers several exercises and experiential therapeutic experiences, like role play, that addresses past experiences. Through this treatment clients are able to learn to cope with painful feelings and learn skills to help them deal with any feelings that come up that may have resulted in using in the past. Additionally clients have mindfulness sessions and learn about healthy eating, goal setting and having a balance in their lives. The ultimate goal is that clients learn how to resolve any conflicts that have arisen in the past and have healthy relationships for family and loved ones in the future.

Treatment approaches are evidence-based and include medication management, written assignments, CBT, DBT, and the South Pacific Private treatment model known as the Developmental Treatment Model, which really explores and digs into core issues. There are also regular AA and NA meetings that clients attend at the facility and within their communities.

There is a large and highly qualified staff at South Pacific Private that includes medical doctors and nurses, psychiatrists, psychologists and addiction specialists.

Family programming is included in the outpatient tracks and offered through an intensive four day workshop. This program focuses on both clients and family members learning how to listen to each other’s needs, open up lines of communication and learn how to establish healthy boundaries on both sides. There are also ongoing support groups for family members that provides education surrounding the disease of addiction and teaches extensive coping skills.
