South Oaks Hospital Review

South Oaks Hospital was founded in 1881 by a group of seven men who wanted to create a “home hotel” for “nervous invalids” in Amityville, on Long Island in New York. The small hotel has since become part of the expansive Northwell Health hospital network and developed into a comprehensive behavioral health facility. It offers both inpatient and outpatient treatment for substance abuse and co-occurring disorders like depression, anxiety, bipolar and a variety of other mental health issues.

Accommodations and Food

South Oaks Hospital is set on a beautiful campus. The inpatient facility has 80 beds and treats both substance abuse and psychiatric residents. Clients are separated into age-specific wings and have same-sex roommates in spacious rooms with twin beds, personal desk areas and en suite bathrooms. There are lounges where residents can watch TV, read and play games during down time.

Clients eat in the cafeteria, where healthy meals are prepared on site and the weekly menu is designed by a nutritionist. Food allergies and dietary restrictions can be accommodated.

Treatment and Staff

South Oaks Hospital has a detox unit for clients in need of medical stabilization before beginning inpatient treatment. The seven-day long detox program offers Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) for clients experiencing physical withdrawal symptoms from opiates or alcohol. The residential program is 30 days. Residents attend group therapy several times each day and have individual therapy as needed. Clients receive comprehensive dual diagnosis support and, when needed, meet with a psychiatrist for medication management.

Programs use multiple therapeutic approaches including Motivational Interviewing (MI), CBT, DBT and pet therapy. Counselors address communication skills, coping skills, anger management, stress management and relapse prevention. There is a strong emphasis on 12-step involvement, and clients are referred to local meetings within the community.

The treatment team includes physicians, psychiatric nurses, Master’s-level therapists and case managers.

Extras

South Oaks Hospital also provides outpatient services for clients who are transitioning out of the residential program.

There is also an impaired driver program for those with DUI records. Patients who participate in the program have all of their treatment records electronically delivered to the DMV and other governmental agencies to show their recovery progress.

In Summary

South Oaks Hospital on Long Island has a long history of offering addiction treatment to the community. With a specialized medical staff as well as psychiatric support, South Oaks is a worthy option for anyone seeking treatment for addiction or co-occurring disorders around NYC.
