The Basics

Established in 1975 to serve the regional Native communities, the Southeast Alaska Regional Health Consortium (SEARHC) in Sitka is one of the oldest Native-run health organizations in the US. The Behavioral Health Clinic—known locally as Haa Toowóo Náakw Hít—operates under SEARHC and offers an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for substance abuse and co-occurring disorders.

SEARHC can be found on the campus of Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital (S’áxt’ Hít), which features a community-carved totem pole dedicated to “healing, hope, unity and forgiveness…and anyone who is working on the healing of the mind, body and spirit.”

Treatment and Staff

Clients requiring detox and immediate medical attention receive treatment at Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital. Intoxicated clients are not admitted.

Outpatient clients undergo a complete assessment at SEARHC and receive individualized treatment plans. The outpatient program offers a morning curriculum from 9 am to 11 am and an evening schedule from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm, Monday through Friday. Treatment length is typically 80 sessions (or four months) but varies per individual. Some clients attend on a daily basis, while others attend treatment once per week.

With an emphasis on the Matrix Model, SEARHC incorporates evidence-based practices (such as CBT) but adjusts treatment protocols to accommodate each individual client’s needs, in the belief that one method does not fit all.

Treatment includes group and individual therapy. Group discussion topics include relapse prevention, early recovery, trauma and dual diagnosis support. Groups typically have a minimum of 10 clients per session. Although 12-step meetings are not offered, SEARHC provides clients with a comprehensive list of local recovery support groups.

Staff includes a Master’s-level LPC, CADCs, behavioral health therapists and clinical psychologists. Clients requiring medication management and psychiatric care are provided with medical referrals.

Extras

SEARHC also offers Raven’s Way (Yéil Jeeyáx), an adolescent inpatient substance abuse treatment program for youth of Native American descent. This special treatment path combines conventional substance abuse treatment, adventure-based therapy and Native cultural activities.

In Summary

Haa Toowóo Náakw Hít, in conjunction with SEARHC, is committed to providing effective substance abuse treatment to the local Native American community. However, those seeking a 12-step approach or more than talk therapy might not find SEARHC suitable to their needs.
