The Basics

Based out of sunny Costa Mesa, California, South Coast Behavioral Health is a CARF-accredited facility offering a wide range of services for clients struggling with addiction and co-occurring disorders. The organization is broad and has locations throughout Los Angeles and Orange County with a full continuum of treatment services available. In addition to its sub-acute detox and residential treatment options, Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are also available.

Treatment and Staff

Before beginning treatment, all clients go through an initial assessment process to help staff members place them in an appropriate program. As mentioned, sub-acute detox services are available on-site though they are non-medical; those in need of more thorough support should likely seek additional help elsewhere. Though the organization also offers a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), the program is more of a transition into residential care from detox than an outpatient program proper.

Once stabilized, clients can begin IOP which is an eight-week program that meets three times a week for several hours. Treatment plans include both individual and group therapy with evidence-based treatment practices such as CBT, DBT, EMDR and Motivational Interviewing (MI). Dual diagnosis support including medication management services are also available along with psychoeducational sessions. Groups also cover a wide range of topics such as relationship skills, anger management, nutritional counseling, health and fitness, addiction education and relapse prevention. While 12-step participation is strongly encouraged, it is not always required.

The staff at South Coast Behavioral Health includes LMFTs, CADCs, psychologists, LMSWs and additional Master’s-level clinicians.

Extras

Other services include standalone psychological assessments, case management and family therapy. As mentioned, South Coast Behavioral Health also has a number of discreet sober living homes throughout Southern California which clients can transition into upon completing a primary care regimen. Staff members can help clients design stepped-down outpatient plans can be designed as an aftercare option as well.

In Summary

Overall, South Coast Behavioral Health has a full array of programs throughout Southern California for clients seeking recovery from alcohol and drug addiction. Each program includes evidence-based care, educational groups and dual diagnosis support, all from a team of psychological professionals. Those in the area would do well by considering South Coast Behavioral Health’s outpatient programs.

  1. Don’t send family here! My daughter sadly has been to a few recovery centers & this place is the worst. After reporting some harassment & bullying that was never addressed my daughter was attacked & property stolen by a staff member & another client. Yes, a staff member! I’ve been trying to work with the HR department regarding the issue and have not gotten any reply back.
It seems this sort of behavior is not taken seriously by management. We send our family members to facilities like this for help NOT to be attacked by a licensed staff. The lack of professionalism is horrible!

  3. South Coast Behavioral Health [SCBH] is a medically assisted sub-acute detox free standing facility. They offer detox, residential, PHP and IOP services. SCBH is one of the very few facilities that can take primary mental health as they have a psychiatrist who is board certified in addiction medicine [ABAM]. SCBH is a true dual diagnosis facility. They are also in-network with Anthem Blue Cross and CIGNA. With their in-network status they can accept most HMO, EPO plans that other facilities cannot. They earned their first 3-year CARF accreditation in 2014 and their second 3-year CARF accreditation in 2017. They now have 30 beds designated for detox and residential clients males and females 18+.
