Sound Recovery Center Review
Located in Puyallup, Washington, Sound Recovery Center provides a variety of treatment options for clients struggling with substance abuse and addiction. Just east of Tacoma, the center offers long-term residential treatment, as well as gender-separated programs. Affiliated with Olympic Recovery Center, clients at Sound have access to resources and treatment options from detox to extended care.
Accommodations and Food
The newly renovated facility is tastefully and comfortably furnished. With administrative offices, meeting rooms and recreation areas, the look and feel of the residence is somewhere between a hospital and a home. Clients share bedrooms and bathrooms, separated by gender, on the upper floor. All bedding, laundry facilities and storage are provided. Meals are prepared and served on-site, and are nutritionally balanced.
Treatment and Staff
Clients receive individualized treatment plans based on an intake assessment and evaluation. While detox is not offered on-site, arrangements can be made for clients to receive medically monitored detox at a neighboring, affiliated facility. Dual diagnosis support is given through individual counseling, and a consulting doctor provides medication management. Treatment occurs in 30-day increments, with a progress evaluation performed at each interval. The client together with their clinical team determines a date of completion, usually no longer than 90 days.
Therapy groups vary in size, and can be divided by gender. Specific CBT groups are offered, where clients learn to identify and replace old behaviors with new ones. Addiction, recovery, relationships and underlying issues are discussed, with stress management and problem solving skills taught. Special focus is given to relapse prevention, where clients learn to identify triggers and avoid potentially harmful situations. The stages of change model is taught and also utilized. Introduction to 12-step programs is made, with on-site meetings held and clients encouraged to attend. Additional lectures and workshops are held daily and discuss grief, denial, boundaries, medications, medical consequences, predisposition and spirituality, among many more.
Licensed and credentialed chemical dependency professionals manage daily treatment and facilitate group counseling, while a Master’s-level therapist is available for individual therapy sessions.
Extras
As part of the holistic treatment, meditation is taught, and clients receive weekly massages. Art or music therapy is offered weekly, with recreational therapy an opportunity to have some fun.
A family program is offered and begins Saturday at 8am, finishing Sunday after lunch. Families participate in education lectures, workshops, counseling and are given the opportunity to learn about substance abuse and communicate with their loved one. Phone calls are allowed after an initial seven-day blackout.
The aftercare program is offered to all clients for one year after completing treatment, and consists of weekly phone calls with a counselor.
In Summary
Sound Recovery Center provides relatively low cost and comprehensive care. The variety of lecture and group topics means clients are challenged but supported. Holistic activities coupled with a safe, comfortable and modern residence allow clients to pursue recovery with few distractions.
