Located in Tucson, Arizona, Sonora Behavioral Health Hospital offers detox,  an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) for adults, adolescents and children. Established in 1994, it accommodates a variety of clients, including those who are considered high-risk and in need of 24/7 monitoring.

Treatment and Staff

The maximum length of a medically supervised detox at Sonora Behavioral Health Hospital is five days. During this time, clients are assessed, detoxed and stabilized with new medication, if necessary. Medication is given to treat diagnosed psychiatric or physical conditions and not withdrawal symptoms, as Sonora does not offer drug-replacement therapies such as methadone.

Sonora Behavioral Health Hospital is a psychiatric facility so it caters to those with co-occurring disorders, including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, psychosis, depression or anxiety. Most clients are given meds and are seen on a daily basis by an on-site psychiatrist.

The IOP program lasts between eight and 12 weeks and clients meet three days a week for three-hour sessions. PHP meets five days a week, six hours a day. Both programs include group, family and individual counseling and therapy is based on the CBT model, with EMDR available for those afflicted by trauma. Group sessions cover topics such as sleep, hygiene, coping skills and stress management. The rehab does not follow a traditional 12-step approach, although clients are encouraged to attend meetings after graduation.

Sonora Behavioral Health Hospital’s executive team has seven members including two psychiatrists, two psychiatric nurse practitioners, a clinical psychiatrist, a neuropsychologist and, for younger clients, a child and adolescent psychiatrist. In addition, Sonora employs 25 full-time and 15 part-time nurses. There are also social workers available.

Extras

Sonora offers a variety of experiential therapies, including art and recreation therapy and weekly dietary groups. Besides English, services are provided to clients who speak Japanese, Spanish and Yaqui, a Native American language.

The facility also offers an intensive outpatient program for veterans. They are housed in a separate unit for detox and are provided with different treatment plans.

In Summary

All told, Sonora is equipped to provide comprehensive medical and psychiatric assessments, diagnostic services and treatment for all ages and types of substance abusers. At a low cost, they assist clients in regaining and maintaining a functional life.
