The Basics
With facilities in Elmira, Syracuse, Ithaca and Binghamton, New York, The Sol Stone Center—also known as the Upstate New York Eating Disorder Service—is a diverse organization that offers behavioral health support for men and women struggling with eating disorders and related mental health issues. The organization was founded in 1990 and offers a range of programs. In addition to its outpatient care tracks, the organization also runs a sober living environment with a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) in Elmira called the Hoffman House.
Accommodations and Amenities
The Hoffman House is a normal residential home which has room for 12 clients in gender-specific shared rooms. Each of the rooms comes with twin beds, dressers, nightstands and shared closet space. The decoration throughout the home is somewhat rustic, with hardwood floors and decorative rugs throughout. The house also includes an office, shared living areas with couches and TV and a conjoined kitchen and dining room area. Throughout their stay, residents are expected to cook and prepare their own meals (with some oversight from staff nutritionists and clinicians).
Rules and Regulations
As with many similar homes, all clients must follow basic house rules and attend all mandatory house meetings. Because stays at Hoffman House are available only to clients attending PHP. As a result, days are highly structured and include 10.5 hours of treatment a day with five hours of treatment a day on the weekends. The program includes individual and group therapy with evidence-based practices such as CBT, DBT and EMDR. Trauma-informed care and dual diagnosis support are also provided along with medication management. Groups cover a number of topics such as nutritional counseling and healthy body image, with a number of holistic topics such as bodywork, yoga and art therapy also included. Though 12-step participation is not required, referrals to local meetings can be made upon request.
Extras
In addition to the above, the organization offers other programs including standard outpatient and Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) as necessary. Flexible case management is also provided to help clients during the discharge process. Finally, those looking to continue with treatment at a stepped down rate can also do so as a form of aftercare.
In Summary
In all, The Sol Stone Center’s sober living option in the Hoffman House provides a stable environment for women in recovery from eating disorders. All days are structured as a result of participation in the PHP, though residents are allowed the freedom to live their own lives, create their own bonds and prepare their own meals. For those seeking structured eating disorder care in the area, the Hoffman House facility available through the Sol Stone Center is worth considering.
