Sojourner Recovery Adolescent ServicesThe Basics

In addition to its comprehensive adult treatment programs, Sojourner Recovery Services also provides outpatient treatment for adolescents between the ages of 13 and 18, who have been diagnosed with substance abuse issues and co-occurring disorders. At their University Hall location, near the border of Indiana and Kentucky, Sojourner Recovery is committed to bringing affordable recovery to residents of Butler County, Ohio and the surrounding area since 1984.

Treatment and Staff

Clients of the adolescent outpatient program are treated with a combination of groupindividual and family therapy utilizing CBTMotivational Interviewing and the Seven Challenges—a program specifically designed for adolescents. The Seven Challenges aims to help teens think before acting out and to make a commitment to change and address their drug, life skills and psychological issues. Counselors assist in identifying triggers that lead to destructive behavior. In group, clients get an opportunity to discuss topics most relevant to them and to focus on those issues. Those with co-occurring disorders attend groups that focus on their specific assessment or address it in individual therapy. All groups tend to be small, with a maximum of eight clients.

The Intensive Outpatient program (IOP) meets twice a week for two hours for 12 to 16 weeks and consists of group and one individual therapy session. Weekly process groups keep counselors abreast of clients’ status and any changes or problems that might arise. Standard outpatient clients meet once a week for a 90-minute group and one individual therapy session. Length of treatment depends on the particular client’s needs and goals.

The adolescent treatment team is composed of LCDCs, CASACs and Master’s-level family therapists. A psychiatrist also oversees dual diagnosis clients for medication management.

Extras

Family therapy happens at least once a month. Clients and family members are given the opportunity to address any concerns they have about addiction, treatment and family dynamics.

In Summary

Sojourner Recovery Services offers something unique and valuable to its community: state funded, adolescent substance abuse and co-occuring disorder treatment. Based on evidence-based practices, the program at Sojourner addresses the challenges that young people have in getting and maintaining sobriety. Much like the benefits of fellowship in a 12-step program, the age-specific environment at Sojourner helps clients at this formative stage in their life bond with peers who are facing similar struggles.
