Sojourner House MOMS Review

Sojourner House is a women’s treatment facility that caters to mothers and their children who are in need of comprehensive addiction and mental health services. The Sojourner House MOMS (Motivation Opportunities Mentoring and Spirituality) was founded in 2004 as a step down, continuation-care program for women in recovery or those who were experiencing homelessness, who are in the process of reacclimating back into their communities. Sojourner House is a 12-step based program that incorporates spirituality with evidence-based treatment protocols and case management services. MOMS focuses on helping clients learn to be self-sufficient and confident enough to live a life in sobriety and strengthen their family relationships.

Accommodations and Amenities

Sojourner House provides individual apartment units for up to 42 families. The units are for single moms with at least one child. Each unit contains two bedrooms with a living room, kitchens, dining room and bathrooms. These apartments are close to transportation, schools, grocery stores and more. The neighborhood also has a sustainable garden program that residents are encouraged to participate in.

In addition to the self-contained apartments, the campus offers several amenities for the residents. This includes on-site classrooms and activity rooms for all ages. There is a daycare on site, along with an art studio, Yoga room, creative writing space, as well as areas that are designated for recreational activities.

Sojourner House is able to provide food for clients and their families through generous donations from the local community.

Rules and Regulations

The MOMS program is for clients who were referred by the country, are struggling with homelessness, have children or are actively trying to reunify with their families. In order to qualify, clients have to be at least 18 and actively participate in their recovery and mental health efforts put forth by the program.

The program provides safe and affordable housing for clients and their families, along with children’s services and case management services. This includes recreational activities, and education for children, along with substance abuse prevention measures.

There are vocational training opportunities and job-readiness events available. In addition, clients attend group therapy sessions, parenting classes, and go to 12-step meetings.

Case management services may include medical or dental help, continued education, as well as referrals to mental health care agencies.

Sojourner House is a faith-based community though they do not require clients to attend church services. They do mandate that clients attend spirituality classes once a week, and attend the mandatory house meetings.

In Summary

The MOMS program not only offers housing and assistance for clients in recovery and their children, but also an array of opportunities that can lead to living a healthy and successful life. Both the women and their kids work towards the goal of independent living outside the system, and are given the opportunity to learn new life skills that will help them reach that goal. This program lifts up those who have struggled with addiction and homelessness, and lets them know they are worth fighting for.
