Laguna Hills CaliforniaThe Basics

With a licensed mental health staff that is trained to provide trauma-informed care, Sober Spot Recovery is an outpatient  substance abuse treatment facility in Laguna Hills, California. The office provides a comprehensive Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and standard outpatient treatment. Founded in 2015 by program director Alan Balagul, Sober Spot Recovery places a strong emphasis on dual diagnosis support. Their belief is that substance addiction and mental health issues often go hand in hand. A unique feature of Sober Spot is the on-site horses that provide equine therapy, designed to help clients learn how to be present and in the moment, as opposed to dwelling on the past or worrying about the future.

Treatment and Staff

Potential clients undergo a phone interview with staff to see if Sober Spot Recovery is a good fit. Those requiring detox are provided with appropriate referrals. Clients who are in the care of a psychiatrist are asked to bring any current prescriptions to their first appointment. Upon arrival, clients receive an evaluation from a psychiatrist, as well as a medical assessment from a medical doctor.

Treatment length is typically between one and three months. The IOP requires a 28-day minimum time commitment and meets five days a week, for at least one daily group and one weekly individual session and going to required 12-step meetings. A SMART Recovery option is offered for those who want to pursue a non-12-step based itinerary. Outpatient parallels the IOP, and is less time intensive. There are both evening and daytime groups offered. On a weekly basis, the track meets three days and includes group and individual therapy. All clients meet once a week with case managers for a one-on-one session.

At Sober Spot Recovery, several evidence-based modalities are utilized during treatment. These include CBT, EMDR and DBT. Groups are co-ed, unless there is a large clientele count. In that case, gender-specific groups are offered. No more than ten clients are in a group. Topics include relapse prevention, addiction education, 12-step or SMART Recovery topics, dual diagnosis support and anger management.

Besides Balagul who is a CADC, the staff includes a nutritionist, certified therapists who serve as case managers, a Master’s-level MFT, an advanced certified equine assisted psychotherapist and a consulting psychiatrist/medical director.

Extras

Experiential therapies include equine therapy, sand therapy, massage, yoga, acupuncture and meditation classes. Sober Spot Recovery provides bi-monthly sober fun activities that include horseback riding, bowling, movie outings and visits to a trampoline park.

Other services include life coaching sessions and sober living referrals for IOP clients who need a safe and structured environment after they complete treatment. Aftercare is provided, and levels of care are tailored to a client’s needs.

The family program includes 90-minute classes that meet once a week. Classes focus on addiction education and support. The seven-week curriculum includes one equine session. The cost is $399.

In Summary

Sober Spot Recovery offers a comprehensive IOP for clients who can’t spend a month away at rehab. This unique program, which stresses dual diagnosis support, has it all. Not only do they have a SMART Recovery option, but also the staff boasts impressive credentials. The comprehensive psych evaluation, plus equine therapy are extra bonuses, and prove that Sober Spot Recovery is highly committed to helping clients with co-occurring disorders.
