The Basics

Located in California’s beautiful San Francisco Bay Area, Sober Living of Marin (SLM) has been offering recovery housing services since 2010. SLM runs a total of four sober living houses, both co-ed and gender-specific. The homes are monitored by SLM staff 24/7 and offer a holistic approach to recovery support, including recovery coaching, case management and group therapy. SLM works closely with local Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP)s.

Accommodations and Amenities

Just 20 minutes from San Francisco and close to hiking trails, mountain biking trails and upscale shopping centers, SLM’s 5,000 square foot main campus is a serene and majestic environment with two co-ed houses. In both houses, the private “premier suites” come with queen-sized beds, HDTVs, large closets and private bathrooms. Some even have private patios with views of the bay. The shared “deluxe” rooms have queen or full beds, spacious closets, HDTVs and a bathroom shared with one other resident.

The Lighthouse is the SLM luxury flagship house. Two clients live in the one shared room and there are also four private rooms available. Cost of stay is $4,000 to $5,500 per month. Northstar house, comes with a pool and a hot tub. It also has four private rooms and one shared. Additionally, there is a private cottage in the back with its own bath and kitchenette. Clients at Northstar pay $1,800 per month for a shared room and $2,000 to $2,500 depending on the private room. A cottage stay costs $4,000 for 30 days.

Beacon Home, the men’s house and Aurora, the women’s house, can both be found in the pretty Terra Linda neighborhood of San Rafael. They each offer one shared room and three private ones. Aurora has a big  backyard with a swimming pool, outdoor patio and barbecue. Both houses provide high-speed Internet and free laundry on-site. They are also close to public transportation. It costs $1,200 to $1,500 to share one of their rooms and $2,000 for a single.

Each house has its own kitchen and a house manager who lives on-site. Clients are responsible for doing their own cooking and shopping. Detergent, paper supplies, linens and coffee are provided.

Rules and Regulations

For those in SML, on-site 12-step meetings are available every night, Sundays through Thursdays. Twelve-step attendance is required and SLM clients may take part in off-site meetings as long as they adhere to the 11 pm curfew that runs Sunday through Thursday and make the weekly mandatory Wednesday house meetings. Curfew moves to 12 am on Fridays and Saturdays. Random urinalysis and Breathalyzer tests are administered to monitor sobriety. No overnight passes are issued for the first 30 days. After that, clients can submit a request which is reviewed for approval.

Extras

SLM offers clients case management, one individual session with an assigned CADC once a week, as well as group sessions. These include men’s group, women’s group, relapse prevention classes, nutrition and mindfulness groups.

In Summary

Sober Living of Marin does not consider itself a treatment facility, but rather supportive sober living environment. The added bonus of trained counseling staff makes this a great option for those seeking a comfortable living environment conducive to recovery.
