Anchorage AlaskaThe Basics

In 2013, John Robert Weber, a real estate agent at Draco Real Estate, founded the non-profit Sober Living, Inc. in Anchorage, Alaska. Weber’s goal is to provide sober living to criminal justice clients who are coming out of prison or fresh out of drug rehab, as well as homeless women and their children. Weber, who once struggled with addiction and trouble with the law, is passionate about expanding Sober Living Inc. because there is a huge need for safe transitional housing in Anchorage.

Accommodations and Amenities

Sober Living Inc. currently has four houses and serves four to nine clients per residence. Typically, each resident lives in a private suite, which is a furnished single bedroom, or in the case of women with children, several adjoining rooms. Furnishings include beds, which range from single to queen size, a desk and dresser. The children’s rooms include age-appropriate cribs or toddler beds. All residents have private keys to their bedrooms.

Each house includes bathrooms, a common living room, dining room and fully equipped kitchen.  Residents are responsible for their own groceries and meal preparation. Amenities included with rent are Cable TV, access to coin-operated laundry facilities and a free house phone. Smoking is permitted outside only in designated areas.

Rules and Regulations

While there is no curfew at the Sober Living Inc. houses, each residence does have hidden cameras in common areas, designed to keep an eye out for illicit behavior. Additionally, there is no loud noise allowed on the properties after 10 pm seven nights a week. Residents are required to maintain cleanliness of their properties, as well as make their beds on a daily basis. There are no overnight guests allowed between Sundays and Thursdays.

Staff performs weekly house checks on Sundays to insure that clients are honoring the rules. At Sober Living Inc., there is a zero tolerance policy for those found with drugs or alcohol in their rooms or suspected to be under the influence. Such clients are subject to immediate termination from the premises. Additionally, moldy food or cigarette butts inside the houses are also grounds for eviction.

Extras

As a non-profit organization, Sober Living Inc. depends on donations from the community, including furnishings like beds, dressers, appliances, couches and kitchen utensils.

In Summary

While in some ways, Weber operates as a landlord Sober Living Inc. is also a project that is fueled by his desire to help those in need. Clients are granted quite a bit of freedom, while at the same time being held accountable. Those seeking a 12-step based protocol might need to keep looking, but  financially challenged clients are likely to find that Sober Living Inc. is just what they need.
