The Basics
Sober Living Community has four sober living homes for men in southwest Houston, Texas. Situated in quiet, well landscaped residential neighborhoods, all four houses are within blocks of each other and within walking distance of public transportation. SLC combines structured guidelines for living with enough freedom to promote personal responsibility.
Accommodations and Amenities
Hazen House is a two-story brick colonial home with a sprawling front lawn for men ages 30 and older. The private backyard with a shaded pool, four shared bedrooms, three bathrooms, a living room, kitchen and formal dining room. This house accommodates nine men with two to a room and three in the master bedroom.
The Mirror Ct. House is a 10-bed facility also for men ages 30 and older. This two-story home is set away from the street behind large pine trees has five bedrooms, four bathrooms, a large living room, a kitchen and a formal dining room.
Hiawatha House is a single story, four bedroom house accommodating eight men, ages 30 and up. There is a large living room, kitchen and formal dining area. The backyard has a pool and built-in barbecue pit.
Lastly, the Spillers Lane house accommodates men ages 18 to 30. This home is a large, single story brick home with a three car garage. There are four bedrooms, three bathrooms, a kitchen with an adjacent family room and a separate dining room.
All homes are comfortable and fully-furnished with twin beds, nightstands and a shared dresser in all bedrooms. Laundry facilities, cable TV, internet service, cleaning supplies and coffee are provided. Men are responsible for purchasing and preparing most of their meals, with the exception of evening meals Monday through Thursday when the live-in house manager prepares a communal dinner.
Rules and Regulations
Gambling, profane language, pets and physical or verbal violence are strictly prohibited. Drug and alcohol use is grounds for immediate dismissal. Smoking is only permitted in designated outdoor areas. Drug tests are weekly and curfew is at 10:30 pm Sunday through Thursday, 12:30 am on Friday and Saturday. Television and all radios must be off by 11 pm. Clients are assigned house chores in addition to maintaining their own personal cleanliness. House chores are assigned weekly at the mandatory in house meeting, facilitated by the house manager.
Daily 12-step meeting attendance and active employment or volunteer work are required. Residents are expected to have a home group and a sponsor by week two, as well as a meeting commitment. SLC also requires a minimum eight-week stay.

With the combination of comfortable upscale housing and dinner four nights a week, SLC is a bargain for men looking for sober living. The proximity of the four houses helps to build solidarity and community among residents. By offering separate housing for men 18 to 30 years old, men of all ages can share their recovery and experience with one another while building a strong foundation for returning to regular life.
