The Basics

Sober by Grace Ministries is a licensed transitional living facility located in Fort Worth, Texas. It caters to individuals who are newly sober and in need of a supportive environment for early recovery. Sober by Grace is a faith-based program that offers 12-step support on a step down system for adult men and women struggling with addiction.

Accommodations and Amenities

The quaint four-bedroom home where clients reside is located in a family friendly neighborhood close to public transportation and local shops. The bedrooms are double occupancy and fully furnished with two full beds and dressers. There is one large full bathroom that is shared (and cleaned) by the residents. The common areas include a living room with two couches, fireplace and mounted big screen TV with cable. The fenced back yard provides privacy for the clients and offers a large BBQ and picnic tables.

There are guests allowed in the residence as long as it’s within the designated hours, per the house manager. Clients are permitted overnight passes once the initial phase of the program is passed, also regulated by the house manager’s discretion.

The kitchen is fully stocked with utensils and food, and the dining room offers a community table. The facility provides three meals daily, but snacks and specific food preferences are left to the clients to pick up for themselves.

Rules and Regulations

There is a four phase process and at least a 90-day commitment requested of the clients entering Sober by Grace. Initially, residents have a week to 10 days to get a sponsor and actively seek full-time employment. By the third week, they are expected to be gainfully employed and active in AA, NA or Celebrate Recovery regularly. The first phase has a curfew of 8 pm during the week so the clients can acclimate to the pace and schedule of the house. As they move through the steps, eventually the curfew is moved to midnight on weekdays and 1 am on weekends.

There are daily house meetings that must be attended by every resident in addition to sober events that are either off site or in house. These meetings cover topics like relapse prevention, life skills, anger management, identifying triggers and nutrition, and Big Book studies. Sober by Grace also encourages daily morning meditation and prayer.

There are a number of pre-approved charitable and volunteer foundations that the clients have to commit at least 10 hours to a month. In addition, the house manager sets up a rotating list of chores that need to be completed daily.

Though Sober by Grace is a faith-based organization, it doesn’t require each client to adhere to any specific religion—just that they are open minded to the process. Staff is able to assist with job placement and recommendations, and can usually provide transportation to appointments if needed.

There is always a full-time resident manager on site and clients who have moved through their phases and achieved their treatment goals may have the opportunity to move into that position. Otherwise, the staff consists of an LPC, pastor and nutritionist.

In Summary

The environment of Sober by Grace is small and intimate, promoting accountability and self care. The setting is very structured but emphasizes the importance of a healthy lifestyle. Clients become reacquainted with who they were before their substance abuse became unmanageable. This facility is an excellent resource for the Fort Worth recovery community.
