Smart Child and Family ServicesThe Basics

Smart Child and Family Services was started in 1995 by six foster parents who believed in supporting the healthy functioning of local families. The facility, located in Windham, Maine, offers mental health therapy and psychiatric medication management for children, adolescents and adults. Under the care of Master’s-level clinicians, Smart also provides a full array of adult outpatient addiction treatment, including assessments, Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP), counseling and medication-assisted treatment with Suboxone.

Treatment and Staff

Clients seeking treatment at Smart begin with a substance abuse and mental health assessment. From there, an individualized treatment plan is created. Dual diagnosis support is available, as is medication management. Detox is not offered, but referrals can be made if necessary.

Smart uses a humanistic treatment philosophy in both group and individual therapy and subscribes to a harm-reduction approach, rather than one of total abstinence. For those who wish to receive treatment outside of a structured program, a variety of therapy options are available. These include individual therapy, couples or family therapy that focuses on addiction, and specialized therapy groups for men, women and those with co-occurring disorders.

For individuals who need a strict regimen of support, IOP is recommended. This program meets three times a week, for three hours at a time. Group therapy covers a wide range of topics, such as relapse prevention, introduction to the 12 steps, mental health, trauma, coping skills and anger management. Sessions are offered both during the day and evening to accommodate all schedules. In addition to group therapy, clients meet with their primary counselor once a week for an hour of individual therapy. When needed, clients can meet with a psychiatrist for medication management.

Medication-assisted treatment is available for those who need help with opiate withdrawal. Suboxone is used as a temporary bridge to help wean clients away from heroin or other opiates. In addition, clients in the Suboxone program are required to participate in IOP to support the process.

The staff includes Master’s-level therapists, doctors and counselors.

Extras

A family program for spouses and family members is designed to educate and support those whose loved ones are substance abusers. The sessions are led by a highly skilled substance abuse clinician and allow those affected by a loved one’s addiction to share with others who are in similar situations.

Drug testing and tobacco cessation support are both available in conjunction with the substance abuse treatment program.

In addition to treating substance abuse, this facility has a foster care program, home and community-based mental health treatment for children and a case management program for adults and children.

In Summary

Smart Child and Family Services offers comprehensive care for the entire family at an affordable rate. Through their extensive menu of therapies, clients and their loved ones can find the support they need. With treatment for co-occurring issues and closely-monitored support, clients can learn how to build a life in sobriety.
