Treatment and Staff
The cornerstone of the Smart Brain and Health treatment program is TMS therapy. Many clients engage in TMS because they have not experienced satisfactory improvement from antidepressants. TMS is a cutting edge medical technology that targets and stimulates certain areas of the brain responsible for depression and mood disorders. Magnetic pulses electrically charge the brain’s cortex nerve cells in order to improve the client’s mood, energy levels and sense of well-being. While most often used for clients with depression, TMS is also effective in treating auditory hallucinations, bipolar disorder, psychosis and Parkinson’s as well as pain disorders like fibromyalgia and chronic pain.
During the first session, clients undergo an assessment to help the Smart Brain team develop the most effective treatment plan. Then, the facility employs other technologies to specifically target the exact area of the brain. State of the art techniques like PET-CT scans, fMRI technology and neuronavigation are used in conjunction to ready the client for TMS Therapy. Sometimes referred to as “GPS for the Brain,” neuronavigation allows physicians to place the TMS magnet in precisely the right place on the client’s scalp. From there, TMS stimulates the parts of the brain associated with the treated condition using a focused magnetic pulse. The length of treatment varies depending on the specific needs of the client, though typically clients engage in five sessions a week for between a month and six weeks. Each session typically lasts an hour.
The Smart Brain and Health team is comprised of Dr. Bradley Jabour, MD, a neuroradiologist and CEO of the facility and Dr. Allen Chroman, MD, a board certified psychiatry expert who is also a professor of psychiatry at the UCLA neuropsychiatric institute and a member of the medical staff at Cedars Sinai. In addition, the facility utilizes the services of neurologists, neuroradiologists, and psychiatrists.
