Founded in 2015 in County Louth, Ireland, by Peter and Dr. Margaret Ann McCann, as well as their son, Dominic McCann, Smarmore Castle Private Clinic is a residential treatment facility for men and women suffering from chemical dependency and co-occurring disorders. In 1988, the McCann husband and wife team founded Castle Craig Hospital, Smarmore Castle’s sister facility in Scotland.
Accommodations and Food
Smarmore Castle Private Clinic is situated in a fully-modernized majestic castle, which was built in 1320, and is nestled on 15 acres of Irish countryside. Smarmore Castle has a 22-bed capacity, and clients are paired in gender-specific rooms. Bedrooms include twin beds, dressers, closets and large windows covered with decorative panels. Each room has its own en suite bathroom. Some bedrooms contain petite writing tables and ornate chairs, as well as folding screens for more privacy.
Clients are served three fresh meals a day, along with nutritious snacks. Fresh fruit is available all day. A continental breakfast is served. Lunch and dinner includes a salad bar, which has cold meats, fresh leafy greens and veggies. Dinner entrees include shepherd’s pie, Tex-Mex food and chicken. During the first six weeks, coffee is not served. Only decaf and tea is provided.
Treatment and Staff
Prior to arrival, clients undergo comprehensive assessments, and receive individualized treatment plans. Clients requiring more intensive care are sent to Castle Craig Hospital, which provides more comprehensive trauma support. Upon arrival, cell phones and laptops must be checked in. Detox is provided. Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT), using Suboxone and Librium, is available, but only used when necessary, as Smarmore Castle utilizes the Minnesota Model which aims for an abstinence-based approach. Length of detox varies, but typically is between four and ten days. Medical supervision is provided around the clock.
Treatment length is between six and ten weeks. Weekly treatment includes group and individual therapy, psychiatric consultations, workshops, lectures and attendance at daily on-site 12-step meetings. Group topics include the 12 steps, trauma, grief, body image and relapse prevention. Medical appointments are provided, for appropriate clients. At Smarmore Castle, evidence-based practices, including CBT and DBT, along with a 12-step recovery protocol, are incorporated during treatment.
Dual diagnosis support is provided for clients with co-occurring disorders, as well as those with eating disorders and gambling addictions. Staff includes a clinic manager, consulting psychiatrist, medical director, medical officer, specialist therapist, addictions counselor, two senior nurses, a staff nurse, a health care assistant, a senior health care assistant and administrative support.
Aftercare is provided in satellite locations in London, and in Amsterdam, Holland. Clients also participate in videoconferencing sessions with therapists. Amenities include an indoor swimming pool, a gym, a sauna and a steam room. Smoking is permitted outside in designated areas.
At Smarmore Castle, hyperbaric oxygen therapy is provided inside an oxygen chamber, which accommodates 12 clients. Sessions are an hour and a half. During that time, clients breathe in pure oxygen, while the chamber is under pressure. This therapy is used for detox, as well as to help clients with damaged organs. Other alternative therapies include art and equine therapy, drumming and aqua-therapy which takes place in the pool. Smoking cessation groups are also provided.
While fairly new, Smarmore Castle provides top notch, comprehensive primary care in an exquisite Irish countryside setting. While easily accessible from Dublin and Belfast International Airports, Smarmore Castle provides an oasis from the rest of the world, where clients can recover from chemical dependency.
