Skyway House Review
Based in Chico, California, Skyway House offers both inpatient and outpatient substance abuse services for adults. With two distinct residential programs—The Serenity House and Shasta Retreat—as well as an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), all treatment takes place on the Skyway House campus, a large plot of land in a serene residential setting. Using evidence based methods and the 12-step philosophy, clients may choose from a range of treatment tracks and therapeutic services.
Accommodations and Food
While both the Serenity and Shasta Retreat homes offer similar programs and lengths of stay (between 30 and 90 days), there are still differences between the two. Residents of the 16-bed Serenity program can expect to share a double-occupancy room with one roommate and a shared bathroom in the hall. Rooms are spacious and pleasantly decorated with twin beds and basic furnishings.
The Shasta Retreat accommodates 22 clients in dormitory-style housing. Shared rooms have bunk beds and accommodate up to four residents at a time with shared bathrooms in the hallway. Because clients have less privacy and personal space, the Shasta Retreat house is the more cost-effective option. Both facilities are co-ed and feature common areas, group dining rooms and spacious backyard and garden areas where clients can relax during their free time. There are on-staff chefs at both facilities who prepare three hot meals a day, with an eye on providing nutritious options.
Those staying at the Serenity House can also expect off-site visits to a fitness center, sessions with a personal trainer and monthly reflexology sessions. Still, both houses offer recreation and clients in each program can expect daily physical activity as well as group activities like softball and volleyball. The Serenity House is generally the more long-term program of the two, with clients at the Shasta Retreat program typically staying 30 days.
Treatment and Staff
Clients participating in the inpatient program at Skyway House can expect a busy weekly schedule of group and individual therapy sessions led by LADCs. These sessions generally consist of CBT covering a variety of addiction-related topics. Other services include psycho-education, process groups, stress management, special nutrition classes, anger management and relapse prevention. Skyway House also promotes a 12-step philosophy of recovery with on-site meetings held each week. Clients also have access to dual diagnosis support group sessions dedicated to co-occurring disorders. There are also regular visits with a staff psychiatrist who provides medication management. Residents also have access to a medical doctor during their stay. A family program is also available on certain evenings throughout treatment.
Extras
In addition to inpatient and outpatient care for adults, Skyway House also offers co-ed substance abuse recovery for adolescents between the ages of 12 and 17 using the Matrix Model. This program features an hour-long group therapy session held each week, as well as weekly or bi-weekly individual sessions depending on each client’s needs.
For clients who participate in the residential program at Skyway House, an outpatient aftercare program is available which includes group and individual therapy sessions at the facility several times a week for a year. As mentioned, there is also a separate 12-week IOP consisting of evening group therapy three times a week and an individual therapy session once a week. These sessions focus on the same topics as the inpatient program, with emphasis on relapse prevention and building a new social support system for continued recovery. Clients should also expect random drug screens throughout their time in IOP.

With several distinct paths of care, Skyway House provides clients a high degree of freedom in choosing their path of recovery. While the Serenity and Shasta Retreat programs mirror each other in terms of treatment, both allow residents choices in terms of cost, length of stay and accommodations. With comprehensive aftercare included as well, Skyway House is a versatile option that promises long-term support.
