The Basics

Located close to downtown Atlanta, Georgia, Skyland Trail is a nonprofit treatment facility that provides a range of programs for substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. In addition to several residential programs, Skyland Trail offers a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and outpatient care on a step-down basis. Founded in 1989 by a local businessman, Skyland Trail, a Joint Commission-Accredited organization, offers an integrated treatment approach, including evidence-based, holistic methods, psychiatric care, recreational and wellness activities.

Treatment and Staff

Clients beginning outpatient programming undergo an intake assessment on their first day. This evaluation is used as a baseline to measure progress, and also helps the staff to customize the most effective, individualized program. Lengths of treatment vary depending on the specific needs of the client, though PHP typically lasts eight weeks. While PHP is offered as a step-down from residential, it is a full-time program going from 10 am to 4 pm daily. Most clients transition from the day program to the IOP that offers a slightly shorter day, with treatment from 11 am to 3 pm five days a week. Most individuals stay in IOP for an additional one to two months.

Clients participate in a unique, individualized treatment program tailored to meet their needs. This includes group therapy with counselors that utilize evidence-based therapies like DBT, CBT and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). Clients have the option of pastoral counseling and the 12-step method.

Clients have a weekly session with their psychiatrist and primary counselor for medication management and talk therapy. There is also a daily core group session and regular psychoeducation classes where clients learn about their diagnosis and strategies of coping with symptoms. Skyland offers a host of specialized groups that focus on a vast array of topics like co-dependence, anger management, skill building, school readiness, sober living, healthy relationships, exercise, nutrition counseling and gender issues.

The Skyland Trail team is comprised of psychologists, psychiatrists, Master’s-level counselors, case managers, specialized therapists, pastoral counselors and vocational experts. Medication management is available for individuals with co-occurring disorders.

Extras

Holistic methods including meditation, yoga, art therapy, music therapy and horticulture are also a major component to the programming.

Skyland also offers a specialized outpatient program rooted in the evidence-based method DBT. The program includes therapy, coaching and skills training for individuals and families. This service is most effective for clients with a borderline personality disorder diagnosis.

In Summary

Skyland Trail offers a comprehensive holistic treatment program including PHP, IOP and outpatient services. The individualized program is tailored specifically to the client and utilizes innovative evidence-based therapies along with holistic methods as well as 12-step recovery and wellness activities. For clients seeking a comprehensive outpatient program, Skyland Trail is a great option.
