The Basics
Located in Topeka, Kansas, Sims-Kemper Clinical Counseling and Recovery Services offers Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) and standard outpatient care for adults and adolescents. It provides affordable and individualized treatment that utilizes evidence-based methods such as group and individual therapy with CBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI), as well as 12-step recovery principles, DUI classes and aftercare planning.
Treatment and Staff
Perspective clients undergo an assessment with an intake therapist who evaluates their medical and substance abuse history, current social and living environment and willingness to get sober. If he or she is a good fit, a treatment plan is created. If detox or residential treatment are needed, the staff is able to provide referrals.
Once admitted, clients are placed into one of two levels of care: the IOP, which typically requires three group sessions and one individual session a week, or the regular outpatient, which is usually one group session a week. This facility offers flexible treatment hours and is open six days a week, allowing clients to maintain their personal and professional schedules. Groups focus relapse prevention techniques, trauma, coping skills, grief and loss or issues related to co-occurring disorders. There are also gender-specific groups.
Sims-Kemper facilitates an introduction to the 12 steps, helps them connect with the local recovery community and encourages them to find a sponsor. There are also resources for those needing legal help, a medical evaluation or connection to a facility that provides medication management.
The staff includes LADCs and peer counselors.
Extras
There is a family counseling group that meets weekly. If the client is referred to Sims-Kemper due to a DUI, it offers classes, evaluations and a diversion program.
