Simple RecoverySimple Recovery Review

Founded in 2012 in Costa Mesa, California, Simple Recovery provides residential treatment and different levels of outpatient care to men and women struggling with chemical dependency. Using a three-phase system for clients undergoing inpatient care, Simple Recovery’s mission is to help clients learn how to live sober.

Accommodations and Food

Simple Recovery has three houses, including two male-only homes and one house for women. The woman’s house has a 10-bed capacity. One room accommodates five women, and remaining clients are housed in triple and double occupancy rooms. The men’s houses have a total of 18 residents between them. Simple Recovery keeps its numbers small so that clients receive ample individual attention.

The interior of the woman’s home has pastel and white walls, lofty ceilings and wooden tiled floors. Modern-style furnishings are carefully placed so the residence maintains airiness. The fully equipped kitchen includes white cabinets, a kitchen island with a granite countertop and modern lighting fixtures.

The men’s residences are furnished with contemporary décor, including one white walled loft style room that has yoga mats and a painting of a tree. Orange letters spelling YOGA are positioned over wall-to-wall windows, while sunlight splashes the wood tiled floors.

Chores are also assigned so that residents are taught responsibility. They are provided with weekly grocery cards and transported to the local supermarket. They prepare their own meals, thus learning basic life skills. Staff provides basic nutrition tips so that clients can opt for healthy fare over frozen pizzas and Ramen.

Treatment and Staff

Prior to admission, clients undergo a comprehensive evaluation with staff, which includes a trauma assessment. Once accepted into Simple Recovery, residents receive individualized treatment plans. While detox is not offered, staff can provide referrals for those in need. Detox must be completed before a client can begin treatment at Simple Recovery; however, many residents arrive with up to 30 days of sobriety. Treatment length is approximately three months.

Simple Recovery operates on a three-stage system, which includes the Foundation, Creation and Opportunity phases. During the Foundation phase, clients participate in comprehensive evidence-based treatment, specifically CBT, DBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and EMDR. Some groups utilize traditional psychotherapy.

Women are transported to Simple Recovery’s outpatient treatment facility where they participate in a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and the men receive inpatient care that parallels the women’s program. PHP is a 30-hour weekly track and during the second phase, women step down to an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), which is between nine and 15 hours a week.

Treatment includes group and individual therapy and attendance at 12-step meetings. Clients are encouraged to obtain a sponsor and work the steps. Groups are both therapeutic and psycho-educational. Topics include self-esteem, co-occurring disorders, codependency, coping skills, behavioral issues, trauma and PTSD, alcohol and drug abuse, anger management, family conflicts, relapse prevention, medication management, gender-specific issues, relationships, spirituality, life skills coaching and grief. Groups are never more than 10 clients.

After the first phase is complete, clients transition into the Creation phase where they work with individual mentors who help them prepare for life after treatment. Services include money budgeting, resume writing, job interview tips and education assessments. While they are filling out job applications, clients also learn to hone in on creative interests, like music and art. During the last phase, residents apply what they have learned. They enroll in school, go to work, look for housing, establish an exercise regime and just learn how to live a clean and sober life.

Staff includes Master’s-level MFTs, CADCs, a consulting medical doctor, consulting psychiatrist, an EMDR therapist, case managers, drama therapist, nutritionist, yoga instructor/somatic healing coach and administrative support. The staff-to-client ratio is approximately one-to-three.

Extras

Clients participate in drama therapy, 12-step yoga and somatic therapy for trauma.

In Summary

Simple Recovery’s comprehensive program helps clients heal from the damages of substance abuse and teaches them life skills so that they can live healthy and fulfilling sober lives. For those in the Orange County area looking for solid treatment with myriad therapeutic approaches and a built-in step-down plan, this could be a great option.
