The Basics
Silver Lake Support Services is an outpatient mental health and substance abuse program on New York’s Staten Island, just north of the gorgeous Silver Lake. This boutique rehab believes every client is unique and should be treated uniquely, with services specific to their needs. Their goal is total recovery—mind, body and spirit. In order to help clients reach this goal, they provide individualized treatment plans that include individual and group therapy using a CBT approach.
Treatment and Staff
Treatment at Silver Lake Support Services begins with an initial assessment where a client’s specific needs are determined; the client then goes on to create an individualized treatment plan in collaboration with a designated counselor. Individual counseling is mandated once a week with group therapy offered on an as-needed basis. This is not a 12 step-based program, but clients are encouraged to build a recovery support network, which includes AA or NA for some. Counseling sessions address topics like mental health, interpersonal relationships and spirituality. Groups are capped off at 15 clients.
The Silver Lake Support Services staff assists those who have employment problems with educational assessment, vocational training and referrals. They believe this ultimately leads to continuous sobriety and living self-sufficiently. Case management helps clients build a total recovery lifestyle by assisting with housing, transportation, self-help and referrals for medical or other issues. Dual diagnosis support is available. The center matches each client with a mentor as part of their in-house peer support program. This is supposed to provide clients with the tools necessary for proper socialization and sober-network building.
While not a residential facility, Silver Lake Support Services believes housing is an integral part of a person’s ability to establish lasting recovery. The residential referral program employs a residential specialist in order to assist clients for whom safe housing is an issue or who need more intensive treatment than what outpatient can provide. They work with several local detox and inpatient treatment facilities and will make referrals if necessary.
The Silver Lake Support staff consists mostly of accredited counselors but also includes a psychiatrist who acts as the facility’s medical director and visits once a week. There is also a registered nurse who makes scheduled monthly visits to administer specific medications and is available to come on short notice if needed.
Extras
In order to offer integrated treatment for clients who suffer from mental illness on top of their addiction, Silver Lake Support offers psychiatric evaluations. For those who do not have a history of mental illness, staff members are trained to screen for co-occurring disorders and arrange for psychiatric treatment if necessary.
There is a DWI/ DUI incident prevention program directed at those who have been recently charged with these offenses. Silver Lake Support provides services to assist these individuals through support and education.
In Summary
Silver Lake Support Services is definitely not a cookie-cutter rehab experience. Located in a comfortable, home-like setting in a beautiful neighborhood, the facility is more likely to make clients feel like they are visiting a friend’s home and not an institution. Along with a well-trained, warm and welcoming staff and per-session payment plan, Silver Lake Support is a solid recovery resource on Staten Island.
