The Basics

Located in the Scottsdale, Arizona, Silkworth Manor sober living estate for men was founded in 2011. It’s named in honor of Dr. William Duncan Silkworth, who was instrumental in the foundation of AA. Silkworth Manor offers luxury transitional housing, with the specialized options of Executive Stay and Young Adult Aftercare. More than just a place to crash, Silkworth programs provide some treatment components, utilizing 12-step principles and CBT.

Accommodations and Amenities

Silkworth Manor offers different accommodation options at various price points, each requiring a minimum stay of 90 days. The multi-man five bed rooms cost $2,500 for 30 days, while a fully private room with its own closet and bathroom costs $4,000 a month. Silkworth boasts an on-site business center with Wi-Fi, a pool, patio and BBQ area, flat screen TVs with cable in all bedrooms and a 115 inch HD in-house theater with surround sound system. Nutritious gourmet meals are part of the package and prepared by an on-site chef, including a daily continental breakfast.

Those who choose the Executive Stay option are provided a private casita, a small house detached from the main Silkworth residence. The executive casita is equipped with a full-service business center that includes a fax and photocopier. Secretarial assistance and FedEx or UPS delivery and pickup are even available upon request. The casita has two bedrooms, a full kitchen and a living room. The swimming pool and fire pit are found between main house and the casita.

Rules and Regulations

Any stay at Silkworth comes with required weekly house meetings, relapse prevention therapy, Men’s AA meetings and Big Book studies. There are also optional Intensive Outpatient (IOP) groups provided. Silkworth grounds are video-monitored and also served by a 24-hour staff. For those who splurge for the concierge service, a sober traveling companion is provided. Silkworth also has an on-site drug and alcohol lab that randomly and routinely tests clients.

Young adult aftercare clients commonly enter Silkworth after completion of an inpatient program at the nearby Meadows Treatment Center. This program includes mandatory IOP, which runs Mondays through Thursdays and also houses its members. Up to six young men between the ages of 20 and 25 are housed together while clients over 25 share separate quarters. This program may accommodate up to 14 men at a time and averages about nine.

Silkworth offers a relapse prevention program in place of what used to be called the Intensive Relapse Retreat. This 60 day program specializes in those who have been unable to maintain abstinence from alcohol or drugs despite previous attempts. This track offers the intensive counseling and structure, including several hours of mandatory daily group therapy, Big Book study group and on-site AA meetings.

Extras

Transportation to off-site meetings, job interviews, airports and shopping trips is provided. A full tennis and basketball court can also be found on location.

The number of extra perks available through Silkworth’s concierge service is mind-boggling. A brief list includes: yoga and Tai Chi sessions, access to the Orange Tree Executive Golf Resort, an employment assistance program, horseback riding, hiking tours, rock climbing and white water rafting, just to name a few.

In Summary

For the plethora of perks and wide variety of sobriety support options it provides, Silkworth Manor’s cost is on par with a nice vacation or economical rehab. For those who need intensive treatment, Silkworth Manor is not the right choice. But for those who have completed inpatient treatment or only need moderate support and structure and can afford to put down the money for a 90 day stay, Silkworth may be just right.
