Shipowick-Smith offers outpatient treatment for substance abuse and co-occurring disorders to adults and adolescents in the apple capital of the world; Wenatchee, Washington. Treatment
The first step for those seeking help is an assessment. This takes place in the little gray craftsman Shipowick-Smith treatment house. The information gathered during this meeting determines which level of treatment a client needs. If residential services are required, they are referred out to another facility.
Shipowick-Smith runs two evidence-based programs—an Intensive Outpatient (IOP) and an outpatient program. Outpatient clients meet three times a week for group therapy for anywhere from six to 10 weeks. Two-hour sessions take place Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. The groups offered are addiction studies, battling self-image as well as self-harm, peer feedback, small group communication, grief, conflict resolution, relapse prevention and family group. The IOP program is similar in format, but meets five times a week for eight weeks. All IOP sessions are 90 minutes and facilitated by one of the therapists.
Individual therapy is part of both tracks; the frequency depends on the individual. Dual diagnosis clients meet with therapists more often, also seeing a psychiatrist for medication when needed.
Additional types of treatment provided are EMDR, trauma-informed care and neurofeedback. Clients in both programs are required to attend 12-step meetings and provide proof of attendance.
The Adolescent Program meets Monday and Wednesday mornings from 9 to 11 am. Shipowick-Smith implements something called the Why Try? program, which teaches adolescents how to navigate the journey from often troubled backgrounds into solid foundations for the future. It emphasizes the importance of education for young people as they overcome struggles with alcohol and drugs or issues in the juvenile justice system. Utilizing conflict resolution and mediation, adolescents are given tools to reverse the fight-or-flight syndrome often associated with addictive personalities.
