Shepherd Hill Review
Located in Newark, Ohio, a small town about 30 miles east of Columbus, Shepherd Hill is a residential treatment facility with programs based on the 12-step philosophy. Shepherd Hill opened in 1985 by Dr. William Kennedy, a certified addicitionologist whose intention was to build a freestanding substance abuse facility. Since then, Shepherd Hill has grown to offer detox, outpatient and aftercare programs in addition to forming a partnership with Licking Memorial Hospital.
Accommodations and Food
During their stay, clients reside on the campus of the Licking Memorial Hospital in two cottages, which are about a quarter of a mile away from the main facility. While the program is co-ed, residences are gender specific and split up between the two cottages, providing a total of 32 beds between them. Both residences are quaint, private and fairly spacious. The well-manicured grounds provide a tranquil setting and allow for quiet walks during down time. There are also lecture halls, classrooms, meeting rooms and offices. Residents are also given a complimentary membership to the local YMCA.
There is a cafeteria on site where residents are served three meals every day with a variety of food options. There are also snacks available throughout the day.
Treatment and Staff
Treatment at Shepherd Hill is individualized but most clients are placed into a structured daily schedule of group therapy, psychoeducation and lectures. Weekly individual sessions employ evidence-based approaches. The program lasts 28 days and takes place in the hospital on the same campus as the residences.
Throughout the course of treatment, therapists work closely with clients to establish goals and connect them to a support community while working the 12 steps. AA and NA meetings are integrated into daily schedules, along with relapse prevention, coping skills and anger management classes. Additionally, clients with co-occurring disorders are offered psychiatric services that include medication management, additional evaluations or referrals if needed.
The staff of Shepherd Hill are experienced addiction specialists. The medical and clinical staff has accreditations that include physicians, RN, LCDC, CADC and spiritual counselors.
Extras
The bi-weekly family program on Saturdays is where clients and their loved ones attend educational lectures. There are also extended care options offered after the initial 28 days that allows clients to stay at the facility during the week and return home on the weekends. The aftercare program is free to graduates and offered weekly in a group setting.
In Summary
Shepherd Hill offers comprehensive, structured care in a medical setting. The 12-step based treatment combined with evidenced-base care makes a solid foundation for recovery within a program that aim to treat the whole person, not just the addiction.
