Shawnee Mission KansasThe Basics

Shawnee Mission Health encompasses a state-of-the art full-service hospital as well as outpatient facilities serving the Kansas City Metropolitan Area. The medical center is located in Shawnee, 10 miles south of Kansas City, Kansas. For those seeking substance abuse treatment, it provides detox as well as an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) with a dedicated dual diagnosis track. Shawnee Mission has been in operation for over 35 years and also offers inpatient and outpatient programs strictly for mental health disorders.

Treatment and Staff

Shawnee Mission’s behavioral health department provides free walk-in assessments Monday through Friday between 8 am and 4 pm. Clients in need of detox are admitted to the unit for stays that average three to five days. Clients admitted to the IOP receive a treatment plan that includes group and individual therapy and peer support meetings. Most clients complete their IOP treatment plan in four weeks.

Clients attend group therapy three times a week for three hours with both morning and evening groups available. Therapy uses CBT, DBT and the 12-step framework. Clients who are placed on the IOPs dual diagnosis treatment track may also attend dedicated groups for handling mental health challenges. Individual therapy is arranged as-needed, and each client has a customized plan for attending peer support meetings such as AA/NA or Smart Recovery. Those choosing 12-step meetings are also asked to find sponsors while enrolled in the IOP.

Shawnee Mission’s multidisciplinary treatment team includes MFTs, MSWs and psychiatrists who are equipped to provide dual diagnosis support, including medication management for mental health diagnoses.

Extras

Each Thursday, Shawnee Mission hosts a family group to provide emotional support and addiction education to clients’ loved ones. An aftercare group is also available for one year free of charge for alumni. Each client also works with her primary counselor to create an aftercare plan that may include peer support meetings, individual therapy and referrals to other programs and services.

In Summary

Shawnee Mission Medical Center’s IOP is a short-term intensive program with extensive dual diagnosis support and peer support requirements. With additional family education and comprehensive aftercare planning, clients can be assured they’re receiving modern, well-tested treatment that helps them develop coping skills, set recovery goals, create boundaries and manage the triggers of their addictive behavior.
