Sharp Mesa Vista Detox Review
Sharp Mesa Vista is San Diego county’s largest privately-owned psychiatric hospital. Sharp Mesa Vista opened in 1963 and joined the Sharp Healthcare system, which includes several San Diego-area acute care and specialty hospitals, in 1998. Sharp Mesa Vista offers a residential detox facility, and a dual diagnosis outpatient substance abuse treatment program. Detox clients with co-occurring disorders are able to participate in dual diagnosis group therapy with the approval of the supervising psychiatrist. Sharp Mesa Vista also treats adults and teens for numerous mental health and eating disorders.
Accommodations and Food
Sharp Mesa Vista is located in the Birdland neighborhood of San Diego. Its modern building and lush grounds lend it a hotel-like atmosphere. Detox clients have roommates, and the unit features a TV lounge for games, reading and recreation. Clients eat meals in the hospital cafeteria, which serves standard American fare and can accommodate preferences and dietary restrictions.
Treatment and Staff
Detox usually lasts three to seven days, depending on the substances the client has used. Clients are evaluated by a psychiatrist who refers those in need of dual diagnosis support to daily group therapy that addresses co-occurring disorders and relapse prevention, using CBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI). All clients are also encouraged to attend daily AA/NA meetings, which are held on-site.
In addition to the psychiatric staff, the treatment team includes nurses, CADCs and Master’s-level therapists including MFTs and MSWs. Dedicated groups are also available for clients ending opiate addiction and those who suffer from PTSD.
Extras
Sharp Mesa Vista offers detox treatment for hearing impaired clients. Families can coordinate visits with the approval of the treatment team and the hospital grounds feature an outdoor play area for visiting children. Following detox, some clients choose to enroll in Sharp Mesa Vista’s dual diagnosis outpatient program or its residential treatment program at Sharp McDonald Hospital, also in San Diego.
