Shamar Hope Haven Review
Shamar Hope Haven is a private non-profit organization that provides substance abuse treatment services to the Houston, Texas community since 2000. The residential treatment program at Shamar Hope Haven is reserved for boys between the ages of 10 and 17. This substance abuse treatment program is long-term and includes scholastic support at the accredited school on site. This comprehensive and structured program includes medical treatment and case management to support each young client on their recovery journey.
Accommodations and Food
The residential treatment program accommodations are dorm-like and homey with beds for 22 clients. Boys are assigned spacious double-occupancy quarters with shared bathrooms. There is a common living room with cable TV for personal time, a laundry facility, a backyard, a dining room and a fully equipped kitchen. Meals are served cafeteria-style three times a day.
Treatment and Staff
Shamar Hope Haven’s recovery program is both highly structured and individualized. Clients are both biopsychosocially assessed and given an educational evaluation before treatment begins to determine which forms of therapy would be beneficial and which of the various groups might best meet their needs. When clients are not attending school classes, they are in treatment.
Treatment consists of three group sessions per day which may include a process group, relapse prevention and a co-occurring disorders group as well as gender and cultural-specific groups depending on need. When clients are not in school or in treatment, they are participating in recreational activities or social activities.
Individual sessions are scheduled at least twice a week and focus on helping each resident reach personal recovery goals. There are also special times set aside for family group and support sessions. Family involvement is also a central component of treatment and family members are included in sessions as often as possible. Additionally, medication management is available for those with co-occurring disorders.
The staff at Shamar Hope Haven consists of psychologists, CADCs and CSWs.
Extras
In addition to the comprehensive substance abuse treatment program, Shamar Hope Haven also offers treatment for a variety of other general and behavioral health issues as well. Vocational training, GED test prep, community service involvement, GED tutorials, social/life skills activities, recreation and fitness activities and gang resistance education and training are all available.
