Located in the suburban city of Simi Valley about 40 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles, Set Free is an upscale treatment facility that specializes in the care of adult clients struggling with substance use disorders. Set Free is equipped to treat men and women dealing with dependence on a range of substances including opioids, cocaine, methamphetamine and alcohol. Shawn Miller, who is now in recovery but was active in his own addiction for 19 years, founded Set Free with the belief that every person is wholly unique and must be treated as such. To this end, Set Free offers a program tailored to the individual and spans a full continuum of care including intervention, detox, residential treatment and sober living.
Accommodations and Food
Clients must be 18 or older in order to participate in the program. In many ways, residents of Set Free get the best of both worlds. The Southern California weather is consistently warm and sunny, but the home is situated in a quiet neighborhood far removed from the triggers of the city. The house provides plenty of amenities including a hot tub, smoking area, cable TV, central air conditioning and a communal computer with Internet. There are common areas for socializing and relaxing including a large living room with a comfortable wrap-around couch, fireplace and flatscreen TV.
Rather than going through recovery in an isolated environment, Set Free provides clients with a community-minded atmosphere where everyone helps each other. Residents are required to have a roommate, and bedrooms are equipped with basic furnishings, two full sized beds, closet space, an en suite bathroom and plenty of natural sunlight. In addition, the treatment team wants residents to stay plugged into their personal and business lives. To this end, the facility allows clients to bring their computers and electronic devices, including cell phones.
Residents at Set Free enjoy nutritious and well-balanced meals that cleanse the system of toxins. The culinary team provides three delicious meals a day as well as snacks.
Treatment and Staff
Clients entering the program must undergo an extensive assessment before beginning treatment. This helps the staff determine the most effective individualized treatment program. In addition, the assessment is used as a baseline throughout the process to gauge the client’s progress. If deemed necessary, clients go into the detox process. Detox can last anywhere between one and 10 days, depending on the substance. Set Free believes that comfort is paramount to a successful detox, and both medical and holistic detox approaches are offered. Medical detox includes withdrawal medication, which is administered under around-the-clock supervision. When detox is complete, most clients transition into the residential program.
The length of treatment varies depending on the specific needs and progress of the client. The standard length is typically between 30 and 45 days, though some clients stay as long as three months. Individual therapy is the crux of programming at Set Free. Therapists work very closely with each client to identify underlying causes for substance abuse and work toward developing tools for living sober. At this time, Set Free is not equipped to treat anyone with a dual diagnosis nor does it implement any 12-step recovery principles into treatment.

The facility is pet-friendly, though bringing a dog or cat depends on the preferences of the community. Set Free allows clients to smoke, but offers a smoke cessation program for those that want to quit.
