Palmer Alaska,The Basics

Located about 40 miles north of Anchorage in Palmer, Alaska, Set Free Alaska opened its doors in 2010 as a non-profit, CARF Accredited outpatient substance abuse treatment facility. Set Free Alaska offers an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), standard outpatient treatment, programs for co-occurring disorders and comprehensive aftercare programs. This facility offers individualized care and 12 steps based programming for adolescents and adults.

Treatment and Staff

The first step to obtaining treatment at Set Free Alaska is getting an in-depth assessment from one of the experienced counselors. The assessment takes about an hour and a half and the intake specialist decides what level of care would be the most suitable. For both adolescents and adults there are specialized IOP tracks, which can be up to nine hours of treatment a week. These programs have day and evening hours so that clients can attend school or work, and are gender specific. The standard outpatient program, which can be a couple of hours a week, is a step down from the IOP.

Treatment incorporates both individual and group therapy that utilizes the mind-spirit-body approach. This includes the 12-step philosophy and attending AA or NA meetings, and evidence-based modalities like CBT, DBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and EMDR. There is an emphasis on addressing past traumas and teaching coping skills and relapse prevention techniques. For the adolescent clients, communication and identifying triggers is key. Set Free is a Christian facility and does introduce those values and beliefs into their programs, however clients don’t have to have any specific religious beliefs to receive treatment at this facility.

The staff at Set Free Alaska brings a lot of knowledge and education to their clients, and on a personal level offer past experiences with drugs and alcohol, as most of them are sober. The counselors are Master’s-level LPCs and LCDCs.

Extras

For clients who are not from the Palmer area, Set Free Alaska offers tele-health treatment services. For clients who are court-ordered to attend a treatment program due to a DUI there are classes that satisfy the state’s requirements.

In Summary

Set Free Alaska offers judgment-free treatment that aims to give clients hope again. There is an overwhelming sense that the staff truly does have the clients’ best interests in mind and thrive on successfully guiding each individual out of the darkness of addiction.
