SerenityThe Basics

In beautiful Loveland, Colorado a collection of four sober living houses opened their doors six years ago, under the collective name Serenity House. The homes are located close to the Rocky Mountains and serve surrounding communities, such as Denver, Boulder and Ft. Collins. Serenity House offers several different choices for adults over the age of 22 who are looking for a sober living environment. Two of the house are dedicated entirely to men while the other two are separated into one Christian home for men and another for women. These two homes known as “Faith Houses” promote non-denominational faith-based fellowship and all the Serenity Houses practice the 12 steps.

Accommodations and Amenities

Out of the four Serenity Houses, one men’s home offers all private rooms for up to 11 clients at a time. The rest of the houses are Victorian homes that offer shared bedrooms for a total of 10 to 15 clients at a time. All homes provide wireless Internet, unlimited long distance calling, a theater room, cable TV, laundry facilities, a private game room and plenty of outdoor recreational areas. Clients are responsible to buy their own groceries and cook for themselves while sharing a fridge with one other resident.

Rules and Regulations

At Serenity House residents are subject to random drug testing as well as daily breathalyzers. There is a three write-up policy before a client is asked to leave. Clients participate in two mandatory house meetings per week and are required to attend two AA/NA meetings per day when not employed or one when they are. Each client must also get a sponsor.

During the first three weeks of stay there is a strict 10 pm curfew implemented. After three weeks, Friday and Saturday curfew switches to one am but clients must still be available to take breathalyzer tests between 9:15 and 10 pm. After three weeks, clients may also be permitted to leave for the weekend. Any overnight absence is followed by a mandatory breathalyzer test. There is an on-site manager for each facility, as well as a staff of at least two LDACs.

In Summary

The Serenity House collective may be not be enticing to some for the very same reason that it may be just right for others. Working the 12 steps is a very strong part of sober living at Serenity, while the Christian aspect, which may not be obligatory, is still quite an integral part of Serenity’s identity. So, for those who are looking for a 12-step based sober living environment and especially for those who lead their lives under the Christian faith, Serenity House has a lot to offer at an affordable cost. A month’s stay at Serenity starts at $600 for a double room and may go up to $850, per month for a single en-suite room. Even with the one time move-in fee of $500 that Serenity charges first-time clients, the collective is still towards the more affordable end of the spectrum. Note that Serenity accepts cash and check payments but no credit cards.
