Serenity Health is a nationwide behavioral health network based in the UK. The company operates more than 30 treatment facilities throughout London, East Anglia, Southeast England, Southwest England, the Midlands, North England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. There are also international Serenity Health locations in Thailand, Spain, Ireland and on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus.
The Serenity Health network offers a wide variety of programs for adult clients struggling with substance abuse, eating disorders and process disorders, including gambling, Internet addiction and sex addiction and dual diagnosis issues like depression, anxiety and OCD.
Accommodations and Food
The accommodations vary depending on location, but are all comfortable and upscale. During the intake process, admissions counselors go over all the options with each new client and match them with the best facility for their treatment needs and preferred amenities. Depending on their preferences, residents have the option for shared or private bedrooms, which include twin or full beds, dressers, modern decor and closet space. Other amenities include on-site laundry services, shared living areas with cable TV and private or shared bathrooms.
All residents are served three meals a day plus snacks. While on-site chefs and dietitians prepare meals, some clients take life skills classes that teach cooking and gradually take more responsibility for their own food as the program progresses. Meals are varied and balanced, and for eating disorder clients, one-to-one support to reduce anxiety, panic and trauma is provided.
Treatment and Staff
Before beginning treatment, all new clients go through an initial intake and assessment process to determine placement and develop their individualized care plans. The minimum recommended length of stay is 30 days, with some clients staying up to 90 days. At select locations, on-site detox services for substance abuse are included.
Serenity Health offers a unique model of treatment in a calm and relaxing environment. Each program is individually designed for each client and aims to treat the root causes as well as the overt symptoms of addiction. There is a heavy emphasis on stress reduction and developing techniques to help the client cope with stress in the long term. Though programs may vary somewhat, each features individual and group therapy rooted in evidence-based treatment practices including CBT, DBT and REBT.
The 12-step recovery model is an important part of the program and clients in some of the locations can attend meetings in the community with chaperones. In addition to clinical treatment, residents also attend groups teaching positive body image, trigger identification, relapse prevention, cooking skills and nutritional counseling. Other groups include equine therapy, art therapy and outdoor exercise—weather permitting.
The multi-disciplinary teams at each Serenity Health location consist of highly skilled professionals. This includes psychiatrists, medical doctors, drug and alcohol counselors, dieticians and nurses, as well as holistic practitioners such as acupuncturists, herbalists, equine specialists and trauma reduction therapists. Support for co-occurring disorders including medication management is provided, but Serenity Health adheres to an abstinence-based philosophy when it comes to Methadone and Buprenorphine. These medications may be used during detox, but reduced and eventually discontinued over a short period of time.
Serenity Health offers each client dedicated time for visits from friends and family at some point. Throughout the course of each person’s personalized treatment plan, counselors help clients assess their interpersonal relationships and sit in on visits or facilitate family therapy sessions as needed.
Those who finish treatment can also work with staff members to find aftercare options through the Serenity Health network or peers support meetings in their area.
Overall, Serenity Health provides thorough, medically-supervised treatment for clients struggling with behavioral health issues. Treatment is evidence-based and includes peer support and life skills training. For those in the UK seeking a structured program with plenty of options for location, Serenity Health is an excellent option.
