The Basics
Founded in 2015 by Jennifer Hansen near Atlantic City in Absecon, New Jersey, Serenity Estates provides high-end gender-specific transitional living for men and women in recovery. Their sister facility, Serenity House, founded in 2007, offers more affordable sober living options for men and women. Additionally, Hansen is a co-founder of The Hansen Foundation, which also provides gender-specific sober living. Terri Burns is the director of operations for both Serenity House and Serenity Estates. She has been clean and sober since August 13, 1997. At Serenity Estates, their mission is to provide a highly structured, supportive living environment while residents attend outpatient treatment.
Accommodations and Amenities
Serenity Estates is comprised of two luxurious gender-specific residences, each with a 14-bed capacity. Both houses are in close proximity to the beach, and provide ocean views. Clients share double occupancy, furnished rooms, which include twin beds topped with matching comforters, a flat screen TV, a nightstand, lamp, dressers and walk-in closets. The fully equipped kitchen boasts a huge kitchen island with leather chairs, and sand colored cabinets. The kitchen is fully stocked with organic food, and clients take turns, preparing meals. Staff is on hand, providing hands-on cooking experience and meal planning.
Amenities include Wi-Fi, cable TV, transportation, Apple Computers with high speed Internet, bedding, beach chairs, gym membership and a bi-weekly house cleaning service. Transportation is provided to and from outpatient treatment, court, medical appointments and 12-step meetings. Recovery support specialists are on hand, around the clock.
Rules and Regulations
Length of stay is between 30 and 60 days. Clients attend a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) or an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) at Enlightened Solutions, a drug rehab that Burns co-founded, which works closely with Serenity Estates. Residents are provided vocational guidance, and support. Other requirements include attending daily 12-step meetings and being at the house meeting. The curfew is 11:30 pm seven days a week. Clients have access to other services including acupuncture, chiropractic care, massage therapy and hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
Random drug and alcohol screening is conducted. At Serenity Estates, a zero tolerance policy is enforced. Residents who relapse are taken to a safe environment. Additionally, staff phones their emergency contacts. The residents must leave the house to ensure the safety of the entire household.
The 30-day cost for the first month is $1500. The second month 30-day cost is $3500. The fees don’t cover outpatient treatment, which is usually covered by insurance.
Extras
Serenity Estates provides a limited number of scholarships for financially challenged clients whose insurance doesn’t cover their PHP costs.
Serenity Estates is a member of the New Jersey Alliance of Recovery Residents (NJARR), which demands high standards from its affiliates.
