The Basics
For almost 40 years, the Senior Recovery Center in St. Paul, Minnesota has specialized in providing outpatient treatment for alcoholism and substance abuse to seniors. The first senior-specific treatment program in the US, it is also the only alcohol and chemical dependency program exclusively for seniors in the twin cities of Minneapolis-St. Paul that follows federal treatment protocols. Treatment is typically covered by insurance and lasts 24 weeks.
Treatment and Staff
The outpatient program at SRC takes place three days a week and is specifically geared toward seniors who have already been through inpatient treatment elsewhere. Group therapy takes place on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday between 9:30 am and 11:30 am and each group may include up to 10 clients at a time.
After these sessions, clients may continue their day by joining larger social group meetings, enjoying a light lunch provided in the SRC common room or playing board games or cards. The pace of the groups and of treatment in general is slower, reflecting the natural rhythms of the facility’s clientele. Individual sessions with one of SRC’s licensed counselors occur at least once a week, with flexible scheduling. Optional AA/NA meetings are held on-site on Tuesday and Friday.
SRC employs four counselors and a number of interns who assist them. There is a director and assistant director in charge of management.
Extras
SRC also conducts open meetings once a month, during which medallions and progress awards are handed out to clients who are progressing well.
In Summary
In operation since the 1970s, the Senior Recovery Center has a long history of service in the addiction treatment industry. While the treatment is not as intensive as an inpatient or Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), this remains a structured and relatively economical choice for those over 50 in the Twin Cities.
