The Basics
Located 20 miles west of Charlotte, North Carolina, Self Concepts Clinical Counseling Services has provided outpatient substance abuse treatment for over 10 years. This facility, in the small town of Gastonia, North Carolina, offers a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for men and women suffering from chemical dependency and co-occurring disorders.
Treatment and Staff
Prior to admission at Self Concepts, an in-person assessment with several counselors is completed to determine the appropriate level of care. Clients receive individualized treatment plans. While detox services are not available, the rehab makes referrals when appropriate. A visiting psychiatrist provides medication management on Wednesdays for those with co-occurring disorders. In addition, referrals are made for those seeking Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT), including Suboxone.
The Substance Abuse Comprehensive Outpatient Treatment Program (SACOT) is Self-Concept’s PHP. SACOT is ten weeks in length and clients attend morning and evening group therapy sessions, five days a week. With an emphasis on evidence-based treatments such as CBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI), SACOT is a highly structured program for clients who need discipline.
Treatment includes three-hour group sessions and one hour a week of individual therapy, and family support (per client’s needs). Group topics include substance abuse awareness, relapse prevention, life skills, changing negative behaviors, social and interpersonal skills, understanding the disease of addiction, improving family relationships, developing positive peer support and committing to a long-term recovery plan. Groups can average up to 15 clients per session. While attendance at 12-step meetings is not mandatory, Self Concepts encourages clients to use outside recovery support groups to maintain abstinence after finishing treatment.
The Substance Abuse Intensive Outpatient Program (SAIOP) meets three times weekly for 10 weeks and includes three-hour group sessions. While IOP has a less intense schedule than PHP, the protocol is similar.
Self Concepts provides dual diagnosis support, teaching clients how substance abuse and co-occurring disorders are connected. Gender-specific groups focus on helping women learn self-empowering tools as well as connect with other female addicts and alcoholics.
Out-of-pocket costs for assessment ranges from $75 to $100, while group therapy costs from $30 to $50 per session.
The staff includes a nurse practitioner, a Master’s-level licensed professional counselor, a CSAC, a licensed clinical addiction specialist associate, a LCSW, two Bachelor’s-level certified substance abuse counselors and a receptionist.
Extras
The rehab provides an alcohol and drug education traffic school for DUI clients. The school offers four different levels of care, with morning and evening schedules. DUI assessments are provided at a cost of $108.
