The Basics
Located in the Indianapolis suburb of Anderson, Indiana, Selah House is a CARF-accredited eating disorder treatment center with flexible programming for adult and adolescent women. While the facility is Christ-based and Christian-oriented, participants from all faiths and beliefs are welcome. In addition to its inpatient and residential programs for eating disorders, the organization also offers a less intensive Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), which usually involves supervised lodging as well.
Treatment and Staff
Before treatment begins, clients go through an initial intake and assessment process to help the staff members determine their needs. While on-site detox for substance abuse is not available, the organization’s inpatient track provides medical supervision and stabilizing services as necessary. In general, PHP is a full-day program that includes lodging in one of the organization’s two homes with eight and 12 beds, respectively. Still, in some cases, clients may be able to do the program from home.
Though each program varies, treatment consists of individual, group and family therapy with evidence-based treatment practices including CBT, DBT and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Nutritional counseling and meal supervision are also provided. Group sessions cover many topics including healthy body image, journalling, meal planning, body awareness, trigger identification, spirituality and emotional processing. Trauma-informed care and dual diagnosis support, including medication management, are also provided. While 12-step participation is not required, clients are encouraged to consider spiritual solutions to their issues in addition to the clinical approaches.
The staff at Selah House consists of LCSWs, LMHCs, dietitians, equine therapists, chaplains, RNs and additional Master’s and PhD-level clinicians.
Extras
Additional holistic methods are also included such as equine therapy, art therapy, yoga and movement therapy for clients with eating disorder-related health problems like osteoporosis. As mentioned, more intensive inpatient and residential care plans are also available. Those who complete one of these programs can also work with staff members to develop discharge and aftercare plans.
In Summary
Overall, Selah House’s PHP is a comprehensive option for clients struggling with eating disorders. Treatment includes evidence-based care, holistic options, nutritional counseling and a focus on spirituality. As an added bonus, treatments like equine therapy are also readily available. While the cost of care is likely to vary by insurance, Selah House’s PHP remains a strong option worth considering for those in the area.
