The Basics

Since 1972, Seashore Family Services of New Jersey has provided outpatient substance abuse and addiction services and dual diagnosis support for adults and adolescents. The rehab has two offices in the towns of Brick and Toms River, New Jersey. Licensed and supervised by the state Division of Mental Health and Addiction Services, Seashore’s goal is to make sure clients successfully complete treatment and learn tools to maintain abstinence from alcohol and drugs.

Treatment and Staff

As the outset of treatment, an assessment is completed and clients are assigned primary counselors. For clients with co-occurring disorders or for those who need medication, psychiatric assessments are required. Seashore provides Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) for clients who have completed detox. Injectable Vivitrol is prescribed, based on the idea that clients are less likely to relapse if they are treated with both therapy and medication. Treatment length varies depending on client need.

Using an evidence-based approach, specifically CBT, the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) weekly treatment includes three one-hour group sessions, individual therapy for a minimum of one hour per week and family therapy (if appropriate). Outpatient weekly treatment is similar in structure, but with a less intense level of care. Clients go to group therapy one to three hours per week and individual counseling sessions are scheduled, as needed. Seashore does not have AA/NA meetings on the premises, but clients are provided with information on local 12-step recovery meetings, Al-Anon/Al-Ateen and other local support groups.

Topics covered in therapy include relapse prevention, coping skills, parenting issues, grief and bereavement, stress management, co-dependency, life transitions and dual diagnosis support. Gender-specific groups are offered. Typically, a female-only group will have between 10 and 11 clients, while the male group is larger—it might have up to 24 men.

Seashore’s START (Steps Toward Adolescent Recovery Today) program provides outpatient treatment services for teens ages 13 to 19 suffering from chemical dependency and co-occurring disorders. With a strong emphasis on the 12 steps, the program is similar to the adult IOP and outpatient programs.Treatment incorporates relapse prevention planning, substance abuse awareness, anger management and family support.

While Seashore accepts Medicaid and other health insurance policies, the out-of-pocket cost for an adult client’s psychological evaluation is $100, and adult IOP cost is typically $100 per week. Sliding scale fees are provided for those who qualify.

Staff includes a psychiatrist, a Bachelor’s-level alcohol and drug counselor intern, a licensed social worker, a CADC, three secretaries, a Master’s-level drug and alcohol intern, two Master’s-level licensed associate counselors and an Associate’s-level alcohol and drug counselor intern.

Extras

Seashore offers a 13-week anger management program for teens and adults. Treatment includes self-monitoring, relaxation techniques, identifying triggers, problem solving, communication skills and planning for forthcoming events that might put the client’s emotional stability at risk.

The rehab also offers counseling services to those struggling with gender issues, a divorce or premarital issues and a nicotine cessation program for those who can’t quit smoking on their own.

Besides English, services are offered to Spanish-speaking clients.

In Summary

For over 40 years, Seashore Family Services has provided comprehensive substance abuse and addiction services, as well as dual diagnosis support to clients, regardless of ability to pay. As a progressive rehab, Seashore keeps its eye out for new protocols, as well as emphasizing traditional approaches. For those who can’t afford inpatient services and need recovery, this might be the perfect fit.
