Located on the beautiful Bay of Fundy about 300 miles northeast of Portland, Maine, Searidge Foundation of Nova Scotia, Canada, is a residential substance abuse treatment facility for men and women. Treatment for addiction and co-occurring disorders utilizes evidence-based therapy methods and takes place in both individual and group therapy settings, providing comprehensive care in a peaceful and supportive environment.
Accommodations and Food
Searidge is located in Nova Scotia’s Annapolis Valley, known for it’s lush greenery and coastal views. The grounds feature a peaceful nature path and meditative tee-pee near the rustic sitting area. The residential accommodations resemble hotel suites and offer private rooms with bathrooms, queen sized beds, televisions, large dressers and closets. The rooms are spacious and decorated in bright colors with modern furniture complete with a sitting room, small kitchenette and dining table and sliding doors to the deck outside the room.
The facility also includes a library and game room with a pool table, an on-site pool and access to an off-site gym with Olympic size lap pool, Jacuzzi and sauna. There is also a video game room, massage therapy room, and space for yoga. There are also offices and group therapy rooms, a doctors and nurses office and staff residences on the grounds.
The food is locally sourced from a nearby farm, and the on site chef offers several choices on a daily basic that adhere to the clients personal dietary requests and limitations. The menus, which sometimes include lobster or scallops caught off the coast the very same day, are designed by a nutritionist to provide the finest and healthiest meal options for every client.
Treatment and Staff
Searidge offers several treatment options, including a medically supervised detox that, depending on the substance, can last up to 10 days. The program, which typically offers a minimum of a 30-day stay, only treats 12 clients at a time, which provides a personalized experience and plenty of special attention to each individual. The treatment plans are individualized to every client and, depending on their needs, can include several group and one on one sessions per week. The programs offer standard therapeutic options like CBT, EMDR, SMART Recovery groups and Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT). There are also holistic and recreational therapy options, like art therapy, mindfulness and yoga, gardening, hiking and swimming.
Group therapy focus is on relapse prevention and psychoeducation. Medication management services and Medication-Mssisted Treatment (MAT) can also be provided. Alternative therapies like acupuncture and Tai Chi are also incorporated into treatment, as well as weekly journaling and reflection and healing rituals lead by the Native community. The staff of Searidge offers several different avenues of expertise when it comes to addiction treatment including Master’s-level therapists and psychiatrists, medical doctors and nurses.
The clients experience group recreational outings, like going site seeing, whale watching, white water rafting, horseback riding and group sports, like soccer games.
Searidge offers a continuing aftercare program of two individual or group therapy sessions a week, including virtual treatment options for clients who don’t reside in the area.
Searing represents the best Canada has to offer when it come to addiction care—a variety of treatment options, personalized attention, deluxe accommodations and excellent food while strengthening one’s body and mind all at a reasonable cost. This is a great choice for those lucky enough to live in the area. There are many facilities that should take a page out of Searidge’s book.
