Oceanside CaliforniaThe Basics

Sean Firtel is the co-founder and CEO West Coast Recovery Centers in San Diego, California. In addition to running his inpatient and outpatient treatment facility, Firtel also specializes in intervention services. After completing his undergraduate studies at Southern Methodist University, Firtel began his journey into addiction treatment and professional intervention training. Firtel is currently a Registered Addiction Specialist (RAS), Certified Intervention Professional (CIP) and is certified in multiple intervention formats.

Interventions are also available for process disorders and mental health issues including gambling and internet addictions, eating disorders and more. While currently the co-owner and CEO of West Coast Recovery Centers, Firtel began his intervention practice through Continuum Care Intervention Services.

The Background

Since 2011, Firtel has worked in the recovery field with a primary focus on intervention services. Prior to becoming an addiction specialist, Firtel worked as a professional chef around the greater San Diego area.

The Approach

Firtel tailors each intervention experience to the needs of the individual and their family. Services are available in the immediate San Diego area, nationally and internationally if needed. Upon contacting Firtel, families can expect to spend approximately a week to determine the acuity of their loved one.

Firtel specifically works with substance abuse and addiction and has completed training courses in the ARISE Intervention Model, Johnson Model and Breakfree Intervention. He also has additional training in family dynamics and in Motivational Interviewing (MI) techniques. Firtel determines which treatment method is best for each client depending on their unique needs. Other services include case management, transport to and from treatment arrangements, referrals and recovery coaching.

Once the family and other supporting members are organized and on board with the intervention process, the intervention is facilitated at an agreed-upon location. Family members share their personal stories and support for their loved one and then present a recovery package. The potential client must accept the arranged treatment within a specific amount of time. Upon agreement, the client is transported by escorts who ensure their safe arrival. Firtel maintains contact with both the family and the treatment facility following the progress of the client’s admittance and recovery.

Outside referrals are available if the client or family is interested in receiving therapy, assistance through 12-step support groups or dual diagnosis support sources. Sober companionship is also available when the client has completed their treatment and requires supervision.

Post-Intervention and Summary

Firtel works with clients throughout their entire recovery process—from the beginning stages with the family through aftercare—and is available for assistance and resources. The family and other intervention team members must remain in solidarity while the client recovers and in the event of relapse, loved ones can reach out for assistance and other opportunities for care. All members are encouraged to attend self-help groups.
