Sea Mar CHC: Visions Youth Treatment Center Review
Sea Mar Community Health Center of Bellingham, Washington, operates an adolescent residential treatment facility specifically for adolescent girls ages 14 to 17 called Visions Youth Treatment Center. This program utilizes evidence-based treatment practices and the 12-step philosophy for young women who are struggling with addiction or have a dual diagnosis. Since 1999, Visions has provided structured care, individual and group therapy, and medication management in a supportive environment.
Accommodations and Food
The single-story, home-like facility offers 26 beds in dorm-style accommodations that are spacious and comfortable. There are several bathrooms throughout the building, as well as a dining hall and industrial kitchen. There are frequent recreational activities and exercises offered like basketball, soccer and softball as well as participating in the facilities events like health fairs and local festivals. All the food is provided and prepared on site with an emphasis on nutrition and well-balanced, healthy meals.
Treatment and Staff
The individualized treatment combines evidence-based approaches with holistic methods in a highly structured environment. There are daily psychoeducational groups along with AA meetings, and programs tracks are designed to last between six to nine months but there is no set amount of time that the clients are required to remain in treatment.
Groups sessions are small and divided into appropriate age and development levels. There is an equal balance between substance abuse and mental health treatment. There is an emphasis on life skills and education along with CBT modalities including EMDR, DBT, MRT and, if needed, medication management. There are also weekly individual sessions that serve as a way to check in with each client’s progress and specific goals. Additionally, there are nutritional classes, relapse prevention, self-esteem, anger management and aftercare planning built within each program track.
The staff of Visions consists of LCDCs and LPCs who work in conjunction with medical doctors and dentists to help get their clients healthy mentally and physically. There is also a full time high school teacher who works with each individual to make sure they don’t fall behind in their studies while in treatment.
