Satori Waters Review

Satori Waters is a network of treatment facilities in south Florida named for a Japanese word that means enlightenment. Satori Waters was founded in 2013 by two psychologists—Dr. Barry Reiman and Dr. Rick Harris. Inspired by his own long-term recovery, Dr. Reiman earned a doctorate in psychology, worked in private practice for 15 years, then ran another recovery facility before creating Satori Waters with his colleague.

In addition to outpatient programs and a new detox facility called Atrium Wellness, Satori Waters offers “Florida style” residential treatment. This entails clients residing in sober living apartments and being transported to the clinical facility for treatment. Satori Waters’ ocean-side living combined with cutting-edge evidence-based treatment methods make it a standout in the crowded South Florida rehab community.

Accommodations and Food

Residents are housed in beach-side apartment complexes and then transported to the private, self-contained 8,000 square foot clinical building set on a sprawling two acre campus. Each location houses about 25 residents in gender-specific two bedroom apartment units. Apartments are comfortably furnished, and both buildings feature open-air hallways overlooking communal pools.

Residents are given a grocery card and are responsible for shopping for and preparing their own breakfasts and dinners in their apartment kitchen. A dietitian visits the residents each weekend to teach nutrition classes and to offer help in meal planning. Weekday lunches are catered at the treatment center.

Treatment and Staff

Satori refers to its 45-day residential program as Phase One of treatment and—since most clients continue treatment with the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), which is referred to as Phase Two. Upon entering the program residents cannot have electronics—including phones—for seven days. After this initial blackout phase, case managers may arrange phone and email privileges based on the client’s needs. Visitors are also permitted after the initial seven-day period, but they must be approved by a clinician.

Residents spend their days in individual and group therapy at the main facility until 4:30 pm, with a short break for lunch. Following a day of treatment, clients are encouraged to take a walk on the beach or go to the gym. In the evenings, clients prepare their own dinners in their apartment kitchens and can take advantage of transportation to nearby community 12-step meetings.

Satori’s treatment provides residents with highly individualized treatment plans made up of many modalities and approaches. This include the Stages of Change model of recovery, CBT, DBT, neurofeedback, hypnosis, EMDR and Auricular therapy. In addition, Satori uses “interactive journaling” to assist with progressive and goal-oriented change, and there is a specific program for trauma survivors as well as specialized dual diagnosis and gender-specific groups. Satori provides genetic testing for clients in order to better match effective medications and works with nutraceuticals by Dr. Daniel Amen. All group therapy leaders and clinicians have Master’s-level credentials and include LCSWs and MFTs and many staff members are in long-term recovery.

After completing the residential program, many clients attend Satori’s outpatient program for six to eight weeks, then step down to weekly group therapy and attend monthly alumni meetings.

Extras

The apartment complexes also have workout rooms, tennis courts, a pool table and an outdoor dining areas for socializing during down time. In addition to the on-site workout equipment, clients are given membership to the local LA Fitness. Satori offers residents yoga twice a week, art therapy and equine therapy twice a month, and access to a massage therapist and chiropractor. On weekends, residents can receive transportation to attend church and are then taken on expeditions throughout South Florida—including golfing, boating and attending sporting and cultural events.

The Satori family program is a three-day family weekend which unites residents with their loved ones for an assortment of workshops and sessions to aid in recovery. Clients outside of the Ft. Lauderdale area may receive referrals at one of the Satori affiliates in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.

In Summary

Satori Waters offers tailored treatment and evidence-based recovery in a beachside setting. With the benefit of a affiliated detox center and a solid outpatient program, Satori ensures that clients have a continuum of support in building and maintaining their new sober lives.
