The Basics

Founded in 2013 by psychologists Dr. Barry Reiman and Dr. Rick Harris, Satori Waters is a substance abuse treatment network in south Florida. With a name derived from a Japanese word that means enlightenment, Satori offers programs that combine evidence-based and holistic treatment designed to promote overall wellness. Satori provides a full continuum of care, with a new detox facility called Atrium Wellnessresidential and outpatient programs.

Satori Waters’ co-founder, Dr. Barry Reiman, has been in recovery for nearly two decades. Reiman received his doctorate in psychology and ran a private practice for 15 years and acted as head of another recovery facility before opening Satori, a comprehensive and growing recovery program.

Treatment and Staff

Satori’s 45-day residential program is considered Phase One of treatment and most clients continue treatment with the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), which is considered Phase Two. However, Satori accepts clients who have completed residential treatment elsewhere or are starting in Satori’s IOP.

Following an initial assessment, clinicians craft a customized treatment plan that consists of of group and individual therapy. Most clients attend the IOP for six to eight weeks and commit to up to 12 hours of therapy each week. Each location treats approximately 30 to 40 clients at one time. Groups don’t exceed 10 participants and case managers limit their case-load to three clients, giving them ample time to track their client’s progress, modify their individualized plans and anticipate their needs. Sessions are available both during the day and in the evenings. Groups are led by a psychologist and typically focus on relapse prevention and life skills.

Satori’s treatment implements techniques from the Stages of Change model, CBTDBTneurofeedback, Hypnosis, EMDR and Auricular therapy. In addition, Satori uses “interactive journaling” to assist with progressive and goal-oriented change, and there is a specific program for trauma survivors as well as specialized dual diagnosis and gender-specific groups. Satori provides genetic testing for clients in order to better match effective medications and works with nutraceuticals by Dr. Daniel Amen. Additionally, Satori incorporates principles and an abbreviated version of the 12 steps, which requires clients to admit they have problem, commit to developing a relationship with a Higher Power, determine their part in what has gone wrong, work on fixing their mistakes and help others to recover once their own lives are healthy and grounded in sobriety.

At Satori each client has daily contact with a case manager. All group therapy leaders and clinicians have Master’s-level credentials and include LCSWs and MFTs and many are in long-term recovery.

Extras

After completing Satori’s IOP, clients may step down to weekly group therapy and/or attend monthly alumni meetings. Referrals are given to local sober living homes.

The Satori Family Program is a three-day family weekend which unites residents with their loved ones for an assortment of workshops and sessions to aid in recovery. Clients outside of the Ft. Lauderdale area may receive referrals at one of the Satori affiliates in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.

In Summary

Satori Waters prides itself on catering to each client’s unique experience, crafting an evidence-based treatment plan to change their relationship with alcohol and drugs. With a comprehensive continuum of treatment, the resources are available to meet each client wherever he or she is on the recovery spectrum. The program is also committed to helping patients with limited resources and will negotiate cost accordingly.
