Sanford House at John Street Review

Located in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Sanford House is a broad behavioral health organization that was founded fairly recently in 2014. It offers flexible programs for men and women struggling with addiction and co-occurring disorders, in both co-ed and gender-specific settings. Sanford House hosts multiple locations across Grand Rapids. In addition to its outpatient care options, the organization also has two residential programs, one of which is Sanford House at John Street for men.

Accommodations and Food

The John Street house has a total of 13 beds available for men in shared rooms (though one private room is available as well). Each bedroom comes outfitted with full-sized beds, rustic furnishings, cherry wood floors, dressers and comfortable decor. The house has three stories and a basement. The residence also boasts comfortable therapy rooms, a games area with a ping pong table, a sun room, common areas, on-site laundry, a gym and a fully-equipped kitchen. Throughout their stay, clients are served three family-style meals a day by an on-staff chef who uses locally-sourced ingredients.

Treatment and Staff

Before beginning treatment, all clients go through an initial intake and assessment process to help staff members determine their needs. Though on-site medical detox is not available, referrals can be provided as necessary. Still, dual diagnosis support and Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) are available.

Once stabilized, residents at Sanford House attend full days of treatment that include individual and group therapy with evidence-based practices including CBT. Treatment relies heavily on the 12 steps though other modalities including meditation, yoga, acupuncture and art therapy as well. Groups cover a range of topics such as relapse prevention, Seeking Safety, stress management, wellness, cross-addiction and family systems. Residents also do daily exercise which can include weight lifting, hiking, swimming or other off-site “excursions,” as the facility calls them.

The staff at Sanford House at John Street consists of CADCs, LCSWs, an RN, an MD and additional Master’s-level clinicians and support staff.

Extras

As mentioned, the organization also offers a similar facility exclusively for women in Grand Rapids called the Sanford House at Cherry Street. There are standalone family programs that provide education and support for those who have a family member in treatment. Finally, staff can also help clients develop individualized aftercare plans as well.

In Summary

Overall, the Sanford House at John Street is a comfortable and well-rounded program for men in recovery from addiction and co-occurring disorders. Treatment is evidence-based though it also includes 12-step support, exercise, holistic care and wellness education, all in a safe and stable environment. For men in the area looking for a quiet and safe place to pursue recovery, the Sanford House at John Street is a good resource worth considering.
