The Basics

Sanford Health Eating Disorder Program offers a Partial Hospitalization (PHP), Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and standard outpatient programming for children, adolescents and adults in Fargo, North Dakota; Sioux Falls, South Dakota and Bemidji, Minnesota, a small city about three and a half hours drive north of Minneapolis. The organization specializes in the treatment of individuals with eating disorders and co-occurring mental illnesses like trauma and depression. While the 12-step recovery program is not a component of the program, medication management is offered for clients with co-occurring mental health challenges.

Treatment and Staff

Sanford’s outpatient treats clients who are struggling with eating disorders including anorexia, bulimia, binge eating, overeating and feeding disorder. The Sanford team designs personalized treatment strategies for each individual to meet their specific needs, goals and circumstances. The client’s care plan is based on the assessment of a multidisciplinary team of psychiatrists, physicians and nurses. While the length of treatment varies depending on the needs of the person, outpatient sessions are typically scheduled between one and three times per week. In some cases, clients will “step-up” to PHP and possibly inpatient care only to transition back to outpatient after seeing sufficient progress. PHP allows clients to engage in a robust therapeutic schedule without having to stay the night in the facility. The PHP schedule includes therapy from 7:15 am to 6:30 pm each weekday. The facility seeks to heal the “whole person” rather than simply treating symptoms. As such, Sanford utilizes a multi-faceted approach to care that includes psychiatric assessments, medication management, nutrition therapy, psychoeducation and therapy sessions rooted in evidence-based models.

The Sanford Health Eating Disorder Program is staffed by psychiatrists specializing both adults and children, physicians, counselors, social workers and nurses. Medication management is offered for clients in need of dual diagnosis support.

Extras

In addition to treating adolescents and adults with eating disorders, Sanford provides a Pediatric Feeding Disorders program for young clients between the ages of birth and 12. Whether it is due to developmental disabilities or a complex personal history, young children are treated for a failure to eat and swallowing difficulty. Levels of care include outpatient and IOP.

In Summary

The Sanford Health Eating Disorder Program offers comprehensive inpatient, PHP, IOP and outpatient services in three states. The facility offers programming for children, adolescents and adults with a wide range of eating disorders and co-occurring disorders, and synchronizes a number of therapeutic methods including counseling, interventions, psychoeducation. Medication management, dietitian and psychiatric services are also available. For clients seeking a serious program with a history of success, Sanford offers top notch treatment.
