sandy oregonThe Basics

Located about an hour outside Portland, in the small city of Sandy, Oregon Sandy Behavioral Health Center is a small wing of the larger Clackamas County Behavioral Health Services. The main location is in nearby Oregon City with a number of satellite facilities statewide. SBHC offers outpatient-based substance abuse care as well as a variety of mental and behavioral health services.

Treatment and Staff

Treatment at SBHC begins with an initial evaluation. Those in need of medical detox must be referred out, typically to a facility in Portland. SBHC does not offer an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP); instead, they offer standard outpatient care consisting of group therapy once a week and individual therapy on an as-needed basis, typically once every two weeks. These sessions are led by LADCs and are CBT-oriented with a focus on relapse prevention. While there are no on-site 12-step meetings offered at SBHC, clients are provided information about local meetings.

The facility also offers a comprehensive mental health program as part of its services and thus, there is a strong dual-diagnosis component to the program. Clients can expect group and individual therapy sessions that address co-occurring disorders, as well as medication management provided by the facility’s on-staff nurse practitioner.

SBHC typically serves a mix of court-ordered and self-referred clients, with the average length of outpatient programs lasting 17 weeks. Still, participants frequently extend their programs, including those who have met their court requirements. Clients also have access to continuing case management once treatment ends, though it is important to note that in order to receive this benefit, they must also be dually enrolled in the facility’s mental health program as well.

Extras

One of the chief boons of the SBHC’s program is its wide variety of additional services, including care coordination which assists individuals and families in accessing community resources, consultations to families, schools, medical providers, law enforcement and other community agencies. The staff can also aid in setting up Oregon healthcare benefits for clients. SBHC also has a special program for pre and post-natal women to receive treatment as well as a supported employment program, designed to help those receiving mental health counseling find steady employment.

In Summary

Sandy Behavioral Health Center offers programs good for both court-ordered and self-referred clientele. The facility offers flexible scheduling practices and a strong dual diagnosis component as well. Those looking for a strong dual-diagnosis component to treatment as well as an wide array of community-oriented resources will find this to be a good fit.
