san-nicola-centreSan Nicola Centre Review

With 35 years of experience, the San Nicola Centre is the perfect Mediterranean rehab escape for those looking to heal from addiction and mental health issues. Set in the stunning landscape of Le Marche, this Italian treatment facility welcomes both adult men and women, Italian and English speakers. While many rehabs focus solely on substance abuse, the San Nicola Centre treats a wide array of issues ranging from gambling to shopping to sex to food. With fresh sea air coming in from the Adriatic and an intimate environment, clients are able to heal in comfort during their stay.

Accommodations and Food

During their four-to-eight week stay, clients live in a 30-bed converted farmhouse on the top of a hill just outside the small medieval town of Piticchio. The shared bedrooms are modern and minimal, featuring full-sized beds, brightly colored built-in storage space and a private bath. Large windows let in lots of light and provide incredible views of sprawling fields and olive groves.

Beyond the bedrooms, the facility has much to offer. A shared common room offers several couches and a television for relaxing. Clients are able to take a dip in the pool or sunbathe in lounge chairs as they look out on miles of hills.

On the food front, of course, no one goes hungry in Italy. A professional chef cooks three meals a day for residents and welcomes special requests. Options include freshly made pasta, oven baked pizza, veal, risotto and chicken dishes. Italian coffee is served at breakfast and snacks are available in between meals. Clients gather around the dining room table to share the family-style meals as a group.

Treatment and Staff

While there is medical monitoring at this facility, detox should be completed before arrival. The treatment at the San Nicola Centre revolves around evidence-based approaches, such as CBT, DBT, mindfulness, motivational interviewing, and acceptance and commitment therapy. Clients receive 12 hours per week of group therapy and individual therapy.

EMDR is available in a one-on-one setting for clients with trauma issues. The program also follows the 12-step model and provides several on-site AA/NA meetings for clients per week.  And for those wishing to work on family dynamics, a full week of intensive family therapy is available.

During their stay, residents are under the care of a multidisciplinary team that includes psychiatrists, psychologists, nursing staff, activity leaders, psychotherapists and counselors. Many of the staff are in recovery themselves.

A typical day in treatment begins with a 7 am wake up followed by breakfast until 8 am. Morning ritual group meets from 8 to 8:15 am followed by a group meeting from 8:30 to 9:15 am. From 9:30 to 11 am, clients participate in group therapy followed by individual therapy and writing from 11 am to 12:30 pm. Lunch is served from 12:30 to 1:30 pm followed by reading, writing and individual therapy time from 1:30 to 3 pm. From 3 to 4:30 pm, clients take part in a yoga class, group therapy or 12-step meeting followed by a break from 4:30 to 5 pm. From 5 to 6:30 pm, there is more group therapy followed by physical activity from 6:30 to 8 pm. Dinner is served from 8 to 9 pm followed by free time and reflection from 9 to 10:30 pm. The day ends with lights out at 10:30 pm.

After the completion of treatment, clients are referred to a professional in the UK for continuing aftercare, which includes three follow-up sessions at one month, three months and six months. The meetings can be held face to face or via Skype.

Extras

The beach is less than 20 miles away and can be visited on weekends. For exercise, the San Nicole Centre offers a full gym, a football field and volleyball court. An art studio welcomes clients to participate in photography, pottery, Italian language, computer and cooking classes.

The expansive program includes 10 hours per week of engaging classes as well as a variety of sightseeing excursions and fun outings on the weekends.

In Summary

San Nicola allows clients to receive intensive therapy and 12-step work as they learn Italian and eat freshly made pasta. From the staff to the lodging to the amenities, clients have access to high-end treatment and full time care in a gorgeous setting.
