The Basics
San Marino Psychiatric Associates (SMPA) is located in the quaint town of San Marino outside of Los Angeles. This facility provides comprehensive care for people of all ages dealing with mental health disorders or chemical dependency issues. Programming can be facilitated in several forms, including psychotherapy sessions, medication and various types of evidence-based approaches. Additionally San Marino Psychiatric Associates offers more intensive services like detox and day treatment through their care system at Las Encinas Hospital in Pasadena. San Marino Psychiatric Associates has been around since the 1970s when doctors Berry McCord and Frank Minero founded it, and today it’s one of the largest clinician owned behavioral health facilities in the San Gabriel Valley.
Treatment and Staff
SMPA has programs to suit most needs of all ages, such as life transition, developmental issues, and a number of disorders like depressions, anxiety, bipolar, PTSD, borderline personality ADD/ADHD, and autism spectrum clients. The staff is comprised of seven psychiatrists who work in collaboration with other agencies and the hospital in order to provide wraparound care services.
Addiction clients are offered programs at Las Encinas after as assessment at SMPA. Cients can receive medically monitored inpatient detox for three to seven days on average and an intensive inpatient program. These services are specifically geared towards adults, and has a full treatment schedule of at least four groups per day, seven days a week, of psychoeducation, recreational therapy, process groups and sessions that focus on co-occurring disorders.
The outpatient services through SMPA can take place on site or at the hospital depending on needs. Therapeutic modalities are CBT, family focused therapy, psychodynamic therapy and more. For younger clients there are also play therapy methods and creative, expressive approaches applied.
SMPA does not necessarily lean on the 12-step philosophy in its practices, but does provide information and resources about AA and NA meetings that can be attended as an extra layer of support, and Al-Anon meetings for family members. Las Encinas, however, does hold on site 12-step meetings weekly and encourages their clients to attend.
In addition to the on-site staff psychiatrist there are also psychiatric nurses who assist with client’s treatment and management of medications.
Extras
Through the Las Encinas partner program, clients loved ones have the intensive family program available to them. This consists of education and counseling support. There are also free aftercare services with private practitioners, referrals to sober living homes and connection to community based resources.
