san luis obispo californiaThe Basics

San Luis Obispo County Drug and Alcohol Services was founded in 1968 and is a subsidiary of the San Luis Obispo County health agency services. The program has branches at four different locations —in San Luis Obispo, Grover Beach, Atascadero and Paso Robles—offering detox and outpatient services for adult men and women.

Located midway between Los Angeles and San Francisco on the Central coast of California, SLO uses traditional therapy, 12-step philosophy and a two-phase recovery model to assist clients in establishing and maintaining sobriety—from detox through aftercare.

Treatment and Staff

The intake process at SLO begins with a one-on-one interview with a counselor. If it is determined that the client needs more intensive treatment, they are referred to an outside residential program.

If the client is unstable, they are referred to SLO’s detox program which incorporates group and individual therapy as well as Suboxone for opiate withdrawal symptoms. Detox is an integral part of the first phase of treatment—the Stabilization phase, and duration is determined by the counselor’s assessment of the client. Clients must attend a minimum of one group meeting per week (depending on individualized plans; some clients participate five days a week). The group meeting sizes vary—ranging from two to 25 clients per meeting.

Following detox, the Stabilization phase continues with basic outpatient treatment which typically consists of three individual and group meetings per week lasting up to a month. Treatment is a combination of 12-step principles and CBT. Group topics include relapse prevention, drug and addiction education and the individual steps. Clients are required to attend a minimum of one outside AA/NA meeting per week, but are encouraged to attend more. Individual counseling is scheduled based on the needs of the client.

Next, the client steps down to the Early Recovery phase which consists of two group plus one educational session a week. Clients stay enrolled anywhere from one to 18 months—until their counselor determines they are ready to step down to aftercare. Meeting times are available both during the day and in the evenings.

The outpatient staff consists of CADCs and licensed counselors. All SLO programs support dual diagnosis by working together with SLO Mental Health Services to address the needs of clients with co-occurring disorders.

Extras

SLO offers a family program that consists of educational groups that involve both the client and their family members. These meetings focus on teaching clients and their loved ones about addiction issues and how to better communicate.

SLO also provides court-mandated programs, community outreach and early prevention programs for adolescents. Additionally, a perinatal outpatient program supports pregnant women and mothers with a history of substance abuse and addiction. This group meets four days a week for three-hour sessions of individual, family and group therapy with parenting support and educational classes. Children of mothers in the program participate in play therapy to help process feelings.

The facility’s aftercare program consists of group meetings. Number of meetings and length of this program is based on the needs of the client.

Summary

SLO County Drug and Alcohol Services is a thorough program for adult men and women who are seeking affordable and individualized treatment. With a continuum of care that includes detox, outpatient and aftercare and with specialized treatment for mothers, SLO is committed to helping clients develop a stable foundation for long-term sobriety.
